FALL is FALLING around my feet.
Not that I am wearing FALL colors…………..but I was AMAZED at how beautiful all these different hues came together.
WHAT have I BEEN UP TOO………….
WELL, for starters THE FIRST BORN CALLED wanting a SALMON LASAGNE!
ANY time I get a REQUEST from a SON; I TRY TO FILL IT and I DID!
I had DONE some SHOPPING BEFORE fetching the ingredients. (SEE SPARKLETTES!)
YOU know the HOLIDAYS are coming and I DONOT HAVE ENOUGH BLING TO PARTY RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!
So, Now that has been RECTIFIED I can share this quick recipe with YOU!
The SALMON LASAGNE recipe was given to me by someone in ITALY!GILDA was it YOU?I know YOU taught me to cook THE REAL BEEF LASAGNE but this is a MYSTERY………if your OUT there reading me please comment and let me know!I CANNOT BELIEVE I DONOT REMEMBER!
FIRST we cook the noodles.They ALWAYS Break for me……..even if I STIR………etc etc.
These are GLUTEN FREE so a bit softer to the touch.
Then we make the BÉCHAMEL SAUCE!
BUTTER ~ FLOUR ~ MILK
NOTE MY NAILS
MY first EVER GEL NAIL MANICURE…………….
This is probably week 4 by the growth.I am on at least week 6 now and still NO CHIPS!
Now it is TIME TO Add the LAYERS………..NOODLE,
SALMON,
MOZZARELLA,
PARMESAN CHEESE,
BÉCHAMEL SAUCE.
Just KEEP GOING Until ALL the NOODLES are GONE.
End with noodles and grate some PARMESAN on TOP
To finish it off.
Bake at 300 degrees until heated through about 30 minutes.
EASY!
I was doing HOUSEWORK which IAM the first to ADMIT I AM NOT GOOD AT!
Nothing complicated just laundry, putting things away…….bending down……..you know the DRILL.
Well, I could feel my back that night wasNOT feeling TOO PERKY!
A few days later I was holding my CAT.Got up holding him and put him back in the chair we were sitting UPON.
I bent…………..OMG Nearly fell to the GROUND!
It has been ONE MONTH that the BACK has not FELT in TIP TOP SHAPE!I am BETTER…….able to move and sleep and I even started back at REFORMER.But I have to say I am MOVING S L O W L Y.
I still feel the P A I N.

FEEDING THE GIRLS has been challenging to say the LEAST.
As there is A BIG STEP UP into the CHICKEN COOP which did not GO OVER WELL with the BACK!
Then we have RUBY here doing her JETE!!
I adore RUBY.
She just showed up in our neighborhood one day!Walked right up to me and I picked HER UP.
I decided she would be SAFER In the CHICKEN COOP than lose in THE HOOD with PREDATORS!

DON’T ASK WHY because that will throw me into HYSTERICS.
Let’s just say things are not disappearing nor are her pants RUINED from their washing machine.I have to IRON most of MOM’s shirts………which is OKAY as I like to iron NOW.I have the time Plus, SANTA got me a NEW IRON LAST YEAR that WORKS!SO,I took the IRONING OUTSIDE into the GARDEN to get a GOOD SHOT for SOFISTAFUNK.

You look dang good for somebody who is feeling bad. Bravo to you! I admire your eye for textiles and texture. Hope you feel better. I haven’t met the reformer (sounds medieval) but I do Pilates, and my back is grateful.
FYI, “then” goes with time: We had dinner THEN we had dessert. “Than” goes with comparisons: Eating is more fun THAN ironing. How to remember that? Time has an E but no A, so “thEn” for usage with time?
It’s wonderful that you iron your mother’s clothes. Preserving dignity is so important to well-being. You look smashing doing it. I hate to iron. I am too much a perfectionist. In trying too hard, I make unintended creases, which are then (THEN–time) impossible to erase. It takes me forever. Husband is very slapdash and gets it done in no tim, with decent results. He irons better than me (THAN! comparison).

Shipped your French Spa Salts on Saturday and they are due to arrive at your house today. Enjoy!
Yard – well, still working on digging up and replacing plants that were killed in a big snow storm 2 years ago (and we live in Southern California near the ocean.) Also finished spray painting all my beautiful French Styled patio furniture. The pads were faded but in good condition. Couldn’t decide what new fabric to use so I just sprayed all of them black using Krylon’s new Dual Superbond. Only cost $5 to $10 per cushion instead of $20 to $60 for new cushions – saving money to spend on Pâté and Brie. Everything looks fabulous!
Kitchen – son called last night and asked me to make Camenbert for when he and his family visit for Christmas. Not sure I will have enough time for it to ripen properly. May double the culture to make it convert to cheese faster. May work, may not but worth a try, n’est pas?
Kitchen – also prepping jars of Lavender Sugar, Vanilla Sugar and Pumpkin Spice Sugar to give as Christmas Gifts. I package them in the French Working Glasses from Luminarc because the glass is so clear and sparkling.
Candles – just installed a large order at a beautiful French Boutique / Interior Design Shop in Costa Mesa a few blocks from Hoag Hospital. They have the most gorgeous things. It feels like a mini trip to Paris and the owners are très agréable. If you live in Orange County or anywhere nearby, it is worth the trip. http://www.thefrenchcontainer.com/ Then zip on over to Rogers Gardens in Newport Beach for their Christmas Displays! It will be a day in Heaven!
Other details (because YOU asked) – bought a French Louis XV styled buffet this summer. It was made in Italy in the 1920’s but looks totally French. The color has faded from a dark walnut to medium walnut over the years. Thinking of darkening it again before the Holidays.
AND… still hoping our friend Andrea (AKA The French Basketeer) will have another French Food Camp before Christmas. (Hint, hint!) Need my French culture fix!
That’s not all but enough for now!

Dearest Contessa, I so look forward to your posts and reading about your little adventures and dressing up. Sorry your back has been playing up, I know only too well how painful it can be. I had a nasty fall in my early 20’s, of all things, doing the laundry. Running downstairs with a basket full of laundry, I was airborne and landed with such a bang, didn’t break anything just badly bruised and shaken, I did see the stars however. Pain gets worse the with passing years, I lave learned to live with it. Leave for AU soon, visit my daughter and family in Sydney then onto Perth to check on my elderly mom and give my sister s break. My daughter is having s baby early January so Xmas will be in Sydney this year. Will not be back in HK until after Chinese New Year, late February.

Your back ache sounds nasty…I hope it mends soon. It is important to keep up appearances so that lipstick and your manicure are helping you to “feel better” by looking the part.

Yummy Salmon recipe for the eldest:) It truly is one of Mama’s joys to cook for our loved ones. I know it satisfied his home cooked meal needs! Just when I need a “blog~fix” your posts come my way! Thank you for your emails! I usually end up reading three or four in a row to catch~up. 🙂 Your mother is beautiful, and you are blessed to have her here with you. Glad she likes to color! Just found some little colored pencils I got at the Design Bloggers Conference this past spring; they were lost in our Tiny House.
Also, I liked reading about the woman who sent you the green malachite necklace ~ what a beauty she is! Her necklace is stunning! Funny, heading to 55 this coming January ~ I’m being drawn inexplicably to large necklaces… {I’ve always worn small ones.} Not happy about the falling neckline, either. Kinda stinks. Know how you feel!
You’d asked what we all are up to: well, I just more or less retired from working as an aide in our school district. Hubby has a new position beginning mid~November in Dallas, TX, so… WE are moving this week with our little trailer {vis~a~vis the Tiny House} and two cars caravaning our way across a few states! Hello Barbara, I, too, live in Riverside County (southern end in the Southern California Wine Country). Sorry we have never had a chance to meet up as you are apparently off to Dallas soon. Have you ever had a chance to visit Vintique Alley on Elizabeth Street in Riverside? https://www.facebook.com/vintiquealleyriverside/ It is such a fun place to shop – a great mix of reasonably priced French and Shabby Chic.
When you get to Dallas be sure to check out Consignment Heaven. They have moderate prices for GREAT things! http://consignmentheaven.com/ For a real French fix, visit Clutter Antiques on Lovers Lane in Dallas and Inessa Stewart on Oaklawn down in the Market District near the River. Their prices are quite high but both places will give you design inspiration. Dallas has lots of wonderful things on Craigslist for 10% to 30% of what you would pay in a shop.
Two great places to eat in Dallas for a French feel are Eatzi’s Market & Bakery(as well as an eat-in Cafe) http://eatzis.com/ and La Madelaine Restaurant. We had the best Thanksgiving Dinner EVER, EVER, EVER as a take-out from La Madelaine in Dallas.
Enjoy Dallas! They are a church-going community so I am sure you will find many like-minded people to be your friends. I worked for a Dallas-based company for nearly 9 years and always loved to visit the area.

Love this post, you are looking gorgeous as ever. I’m so sorry to hear about your bad back, ugh I’m on the same page, I have also hurt my back. It’s getting better now but I had to stop doing my workouts to give it a rest, I can still go for long walks and I do stretching but the exercises classes I do had to be put on hold.
I hurt mine doing lots of cleaning of my house and my office building. I like to do it myself as they are my properties but someday I’ll have to delegate these tasks, not happy about that!
I’ve been very focussed on my home and working on a couple of decorating projects, my favourite things to do.
I’ll be throwing together that lasagna, looks delicious. My family will love that, thank you so much for the recipe. Gentle hug from one bad back to another! XOX

Elizabeth, So loved catching up with what you are doing. I am so sorry to hear about your back. That is just the worst as I know you like to keep busy and are usually all over the place. I hope you are on the mend. Your mom is darling. I love her smile and she reminds me of my grandma who is now 99! I also take care of some of her wardrobe as no one else cares and she always had a lot of pride in her appearance. Just bought her new shoes this week and can’t wait to bring them to her.
The jean skirt looks lovely on you and that picture of you ironing is awesome. I have to check out her site. Great name! You and Penelope look gorgeous. She seems like a neat lady. I would love to get to that show. How long does it run? Is it over already?
I also have been nuts. Two Halloween parties in the ‘hood, son was home from college, now election on my dad’s birthday, Jackson’s birthday 4 days later, Thanksgiving, the other son’s birthday a week later and then yikes I’m behind on Christmas. That is how I roll around this time of year. Hoping maybe you, Jen and I can meet up one day for lunch if we can all make it work.
p.s. Loved the texting hubs about the shoe choices. You are too cute. I’d love to see your texts. Sounds like mine and husband fakes caring about such things to be nice! Lol.

Well, I’ve been “supervising” a lot. My lovely young woman who does the gardening finished putting wood mulch chips on the rose garden. (I hope David Austin roses like fine pine and spruce wood mulch. She weeded and then transplanted all of the Campanulas my mother had grown from seed into a separate flowerbed to give the roses more room. One rose has suckered all over but it doesn’t have thorns. It’s called Chloris. I am sure that when my mother planted it she didn’t realize how massive it would become. The wood chip mulch was watered down and now the whole yard smells like Christmas (well, Christmas trees).
I am not sure if anyone else in her comments has written to help you with
“then” and “than” but I will attempt it and then illustrate it!
“Then” refers to time – as in somewhat later. “than” is used for comparison — i.e., you are younger than I am.
Two weeks ago, I was walking past my laptop with a bowl of soup when I tripped. Then the bowl flew upside down and the soup flew mid-air but landed on the open laptop. I picked up the laptop then tried to hold it upside down to drain out the soup.
Two days later I realized soup was still draining out of the inside of the laptop. I began, then, to realize that all was lost. I was perhaps slower than most people in realizing that no power meant the signing of the laptop’s death certificate. So I went to Apple and said could you show me your MacBook Pros that are comparable to mine? Could you print out the specs? Could you itemize the cost of repairing it? When the “genius” came back, I then realized that it was going to be more expensive to repair the laptop than it would be to buy a new one.
There is nothing more humiliating than having the Apple genius show you the sad damage. After the Apple store, with estimates, model info, repair quotes (with a rather pointed note about its being beyond repair), I then went to my insurance broker who turned out to be a wonderful woman of Italian heritage. It was then that I began to relax. She said she’d let me use her phone to call the insurance claims and she emailed all of the documentation to the adjustor. I explained that I did not want to replace it with the newest model as it had fewer usb ports and no hdml although there are adaptors for that. Well, I just don’t want a lot of stuff to lose (losing is better than spilling soup though). Then the insurance people said they’d
be quite happy to replace mine with the 2015 model that has more ports than the 2016… (and is less expensive). Then I have to wait to have one specially ordered. I had forgotten that I have a deluxe insurance policy. I wondered how I would afford the deductible which is more than I have but imagine how relieved I was when I was informed that there will be no deductible!
So today, my friend took me for a drive to see if the swans were stopping over on their migration south. There were more than I thought (8) there’d be at the pond but fewer than previous years. It only took an hour to do this. It’s a gorgeous day. We had more rain than ever before during this past summer and it felt as if we had had no summer but today there is hope that there will be more of this than snow for the next week.
I was happy coming home. I lost some data (but some was backed up) but within a few minutes of writing this I was then sad. Really sad and wistful. What was not backed up was my letters with Ellie and her lovely answers back again. I will have to cherish her only in my memory now rather than in writing. I will be buying her books for my new computer.

Oh Contessa, you and lady P, would have drawn my attention as well as an on looker. The two of you together intrigue the most decerning of antique dealers most certain of that. As for the urn choice of shoes I chose it before I finished your choice and why or the approval from the Italian. BUT! I must mention you could have pulled off the rain boots come rain or shine 🙂
The velvet chair would of had me at….. HELLO ! And I would have said to myself, why can I not find such a chair of my own in this shape and perhaps a brown velvet, maybe a taupe velvet like on Renee’s bed in Santa Barbara Ca. That I fell in love with.
Or even a French Bleu would work for me, as for velvet slips can’t wait to see them, perhaps you will find a way to bling them with studded fringe keeping it vintage and oh so real.
I love your garden photo ironing, that would never work here on our hot desert winds, but I can dream.
Take care of the ever so charming flirtation of the bend and snap, a good bend can lead to a snap and then the sofa is where you land yourself through the holidays, I say go in for a fine tune-up with a great Chiroprator I love how it keeps me limber and ready for anything. Perhaps a visit to your local acupuncturist, I find great relief with this treat,ent as well, getting me into my Zen place.
Moist heat works well on pinched nerves and mussels. The best of the ballerinas practice these treatments, you my dear in your dance days I am most certain added something know one has seen ever before to the dance studio floor.

Hello Dore, There was a red mohair velvet recamier on Craigslist in San Diego. It looked gorgeous! It is not up right now but it has been “up” and down twice so maybe it has not sold, yet. Elizabeth –– I hope you are feeling better and the back pain is going away. I am looking forward to my “new” computer which is a “refurbished” one by Apple. I am hoping that some of Ellie’s letters might be on my external hard drive. Just a few would be nice. She and I had very different lives but with so much overlap and so many interests in common it was incredible. As I sit here I note a blue and white covered pot at the bottom of the plant stand my mother had. Blue and white…they both loved it as do I. With Thanksgiving, I am sure our thoughts will turn to the people we are so fortunate to have loved.
