We live in one of the most openly corrupt society there is.
More importantly to me at least- I am wondering just how much it’s going to take to move people off their butts and make us understand we are all responsible for the kind of corruption that is going on out there. And just because one (that means us all of us) doesn’t openly participate in corruption per se, by doing nothing one is effectively condoning it and there by actively encouraging it.

Hello Contessa, Thank you for responding. Yes we can all believe what we want, as it should be. Regarding the fake nude pics, these sites just phot crop the heads onto the body. Nothing really us at it seems these days. Hoping we can all move forward, hope Trump can surprise us all with something positive for our country. I do believe he loves America. Not to rant further but the last election, Republicans did not go bonkers with protests….social media craziness… we must accept and go forward. Our divided country needs to heal and unite. What a great post! So many of us are so sad and frightened about the future with Trump being the president. We need to hope his family and other people will try to influence him to soften up and do good things instead of ruin American (and the world).
Btw, I saw the nude photos of Ivanka but read on another site that they were fake. Photoshopped. But… the sexy photos of Ivanka with deep cleavage and revealing skirt splits, etc were real.

Oh, this is the best post election commentating I’ve read, Contessa. Thank you for this. You’ve expressed it all perfectly. The shock. The horror. The disgrace. The hope. I’m Canadian but also wrote a little something because, well it’s all so disturbing, even from up North. I took a light approach though and compare Donald to Forrest, as in GUMP. They both made it to the White House after an odd chain of events, so therein lies similarity.

Elizabeth, I’m sorry it took me so long to check in with you. I don’t seem to be getting email alerts anymore when you post. Regardless, I’ve been too bereft and emotional to write a coherent comment, my tendency has been to RAGE!
We’ve seen unqualified, incompetent president-elects before, Reagan and George W come to mind. Never have I witnessed anything like this campaign, not since I voted for the first time in a presidential election. I drove from UofF to my hometown, where I was registered, to take my mother and her mother to cast probably the only votes in our precinct for McGovern.
So, I’ve lived with political disappointment, but never like I have felt this year. I have cried, I’ve screamed, and I continue to be horrified by our “President-elect’s” choices. Seriously – Robert Bourke, Rudi, Gingrich? What year is this! It is hard to even type the name of Steve Bannon, – top strategist! Really, America?
We are about to conclude eight years with the most intelligent, gracious, and wise leader of our country, a constitutional scholar, that we have not seen in decades. He was an example of empathy, outreach, love and respect for families, backed by a truly lovely, highly educated spouse who realized the import of his office. We should all thank President Obama for trying to heal the damage done by his predecessor. He stood above the divide that he faced daily, and did it with style.
Now, we are looking at a crude vulgarian, with a first lady that can barely speak our native tongue, and a bully who is a self-confessed sexual predator. We have taken a step down a path that should make most of us fearful. We, as a
the beautiful, welcoming home of the free and the brave deserve better than what’s on our horizon.
After I post this, I’m going to my local Planned Parenthood website and see what I can do to support them. I will fight to get rid of our despicable governor and support local candidates whose values align with mine: inclusive and fair-minded, never hate. I’m still worried.
I’m too old to take to the streets, but I will still have my voice. Use your voice and let the coming administration know LOUDLY when you see or hear anything that is against your core values. We have our voices for a reason.

I wish I could write as eloquently as the rest of you. It’s so sad to me that we can’t have different opinions and still respect one another. I’ve learned to live with a man who for thirty years has voted for the “opposite side”. We don’t agree on any political issues and we have heated debates, but in the end we’ve learned to get along. I was taught at an early age that you can disagree with people, but do so with respect. I may not have voted for your candidate, but I will try to understand why you voted as you did with love and respect. And in return I hope you do the same.

You’re great CONTESSA … so on target about this election … but sadly WE CANNOT BE DONE! He is already showing us who he is by surrounding himself with frightening people, including his own children (who were NOT on the ballot and who have NO BUSINESS sitting in on the President of the United States’ daily security briefs!) … the man seems to know his own incompetence and turns to them to help him through this. We are in most serious trouble. By “WE” I mean the entire world … We have to become vigilant and stay informed, and actively repudiate what we must. I hope we make it through the next two years so that we can regain a meaningful voice in Congress. The “checks and balances” so thoughtfully built into our system are not capable of protecting us from the most unqualified presidential candidate in history, the current Congress and a Supreme Court which will soon be in tandem. Dear Elizabeth,
My perspective is probably a bit different than most people here. For nearly 9 years I worked for a privately owned company that contracted with the government (city, state and federal) to provide services for Law Enforcement. I saw so much cronyism and corruption on a daily basis (from BOTH parties) that I felt physically sick EVERY single day after work. I finally quit because I could not stand to be around most of those people.
It is not a joke to say we need to drain the swamp!
What to do, in my opinion?
1. ABSOLUTE term limits. One and done would be my recommendation.
2. Once you are out of government, you stay out for at least the length of your last term – no lobbying, no appointments to commissions, no filling the seat of someone who died or retires. Just gone! This is a BIG country with many wonderful people with great ideas. Our country was never designed to be run by a ruling, Political Class.
3. You will probably hate this, but we need to enforce the Immigration Laws we have. Until we have a good vetting system in place, I think we should put a moratorium on ALL immigration, no matter what the country. Let’s focus our Immigration resources to help the people who have followed the law and are waiting in line like the good, law-abiding citizens we need. That’s what my grandparents had to do when they came over from Europe.
4. We need to make it a federal law to use E-verify or some other means to prevent employers from hiring people who do not have the documentation to work in this country. Come down HARD on employers not the workers.
5. The 14th Amendment needs to be modified so that both parents must be a citizen and / or a legal resident. This will stop Immigration Tourism, Anchor Babies and Chain Immigration.
6. We need to have the Pledge of Allegiance in School and allow prayer for those who want them. I was an avowed Atheist until my late 20’s but simply tuned out the prayers. Not emotionally scarred at all.
7. Get unions out of government. Unions are designed to protect the weakest and least qualified people from losing their jobs. I have seen many superb government workers leave government for the private sector because they got sick and tired of putting up with lazy, incompetent colleagues. That means we end up with the least qualified people running our government agencies. Why on earth would we want that?
8. And, perhaps the most hated idea of all, require photo I.D.s to vote. I do not want someone to vote in my place, do you?
I have about 20 other suggestions based on what I saw over those 9 years, but these things would be a good start.
I will be doing everything in my power to lawfully and ethically make these changes. It will not be easy because a LOT of people have a vested interest in keeping the status quo.
You and I both have a slew of Revolutionary War ancestors who fought for the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. I hope we will both make them proud!

Carol … I assume that you are the same person who asked how I feel about JFK appointing his brothers to key government positions; in short, just fine. Prior to his appointment as Attorney General Robert Kennedy was armed with a Harvard degree, a UVA law degree, and considerable experience as a criminal investigator in the Senate, culminating in going after Jimmy Hoffa and the Teamsters Union. Ted Kennedy was not appointed to the Senate; he ran for election and won. Both brothers dedicated their lives to public service. The Trump children … another story, in my opinion. That they are relied upon as their father’s advisors is one thing, but that they – and son in law Jared Kushner – should be privy to the very most sensitive intelligence reports seems wrong, to me. I’m seriously concerned.

I respectfully suggest that you put away your hysteria and relax. Trump is a very smart man. He will surprise you in a good way, that is , if you can get over your extreme prejudices.
I am happy to see someone in office who is NOT a political hack. If he does not do a good job of draining the swamp in Washington (and throughout our country) then I will be looking for someone more capable of doing it.
By the way, based on all the emails marked “C” that Hillary allowed on an unsecured server (whether she “meant to” or not), perhaps your concerns about national security are aimed at the wrong family.

The people have spoken, I look at the platform in which they stand for, and to be quite frank what was said over 11 years ago is no excuse, but things often time are provoked. I also watched the running in 2008 when Hillary made som awful brass statements as to blacks being late to everything, that they are predictors, and that she wanted a wall in place of some sorts. Many you tubes will show her running in 2008 and 2016 where racist comments have been clearly stated from her mouth. Evidence cannot be denied and as for her dancing around the many email through her server, it’s was not a pretty situation to be in when trust is measured.
Now Hillary is mad at Obama for not putting a lid on the FBI, and so forth, and doing more for her win.
I heard her in a speech say if she were not to get presidency that that fine she would go back to public speaking this made her more money anyways…..as for her campaign funds questionable it’s a known fact and she does not deni it, it’s clear that 20% of her funding was from Iraqi government who supports ISIS….
It’s a democratic broken system and nothing was truly going to change, yet to focus on change the public spoke with the electoral votes out numbering the election to elect H. Clinton their is a lot of great information out their polically spelled out as to the charities of both of the running mates, and when looked at the scale in which it was tipping you would have to say the numbers don’t lie that our hungry Americans are sick and tired of padding the polically wallets of politicians. I am one for change and embrace change, look forward to more jobs and fare trade. White collar workers are not deplorables as Clinton calls out, but hard working men and women who want to be able to pay their bills and put clothing on their children and food on the table.
We also must realize man alone does not run this government it’s, and imagination as ignorants understand it to be is far from reality…when all the rich and famous along with the poor made such bold statements as to who became president they would move to CANADA? Well news flash they themselves have strick immigration LAWS in effect, and their standards are high. One must look into their strick laws as to taking over ten years in most cases to even become a citizen of Canada, and what they even require for you to even stay in their country…..I for one have visited beautiful Canada and would give anything to live their for my own personal reasons and not because of who is or is not President elect.
We as a nation have to come together and stop this bickering and get educated on who we fight against and for, we have to embrace a country of change and realize not everyone is deserving of living in our country. Crime, drugs, terorisium, homelessness, lack of jobs, job pay for hard working countrymen of all race is not American, not the America I want to stand for. When we house thousands of illegal criminals in our prisons that cost our tax payers we should not stand for this, and when our government has wanted to deport them back their countries don’t want them back. We don’t want their drug lords and they don’t either, so I am all for paper trailing so we as a nation can live a little bit more peaceful.
When the demostrators were up in arms during Ronald Reagan, he boldly stood up and voiced out to the crowds to SHUT UP!!
It’s time we all just shut up and help our country succeed.
Elizabeth my dear friend politics is one of the hardest subjects to understand and putting aside who says what to who from both sides is awful, we’re all guilty of speaking in, and out of tern, approitly and inaproperatly this doesn’t mean we cant do a job or should be given the chance to do so. I’ve learned that there is no point in attempting an informed discussion with these Trumpeters (or Trumetresses) … all we can do is everything we possibly can to change the scheme of things in the interim election, and of course beyond that one. And hope that we can hold it together so that we and our country are still recognizable when the time comes. I could go on and on but will leave it with another “spot-on” for your comments and I thank you!

Dear Michelle, if you do a little genealogical research, I think that you discover that most, if not all, of your “undocumented” ancestors actually had to go through some sort of vetting process. If your ancestors arrived by boat (or later, by plane), they would have had to have U.S. sponsors, useful occupational skills and health checks for things like tuberculosis and eye infections. If your ancestors snuck in across a border, well shame on them and shame on you for being proud of that!
As for ILLEGAL immigrants working in restaurants, I did not hire them and I would much prefer that people legally in our country have those jobs. I advocate a Federally mandated use of E-verify or some similar system to ensure that workers are here legally.
I also applaud McDonald’s and other fast food restaurants for automating many functions that would require them to pay $15 per hour for jobs that do not justify that wage. Hospitals already have high tech cleaning systems that almost eliminate the need for low skill laborers. I am sure that restaurants will find a way to do that, too.
As for “draining the swamp”, if you had been paying attention, you would know that that refers to the swamp of political hacks in Washington. But, now that you mention it, there are plenty of other “swamps” that need to be drained.

Thank you Michelle and Merrybe. I want just one woman who voted for this national disgrace to give me a coherent reason that they could so merrily excuse his bigoted remarks, his bragging about sexual assault, his insane and punitive immigration stance, and resulting rise of crimes against those he disparaged. I have yet to hear one. It seems that many privileged white women (yeah, I said it – I’d be considered one too!) just don’t think any of this matters to THEM. The problem is that it WILL matter to all the other women who don’t move in your lofty circles. I guess you forgot to think about others. Not a good look for these upstanding ‘Christian’ women.
Half way through my seventh decade on our fragile planet, I am totally gobsmacked. Never did I think we would be re-litigating reproductive rights, civil rights, human rights, voting rights, and climate change with a crew coming to power who would like to put unbelievable limits on all these ‘rights’ and dismiss what science has proven. All led by a man who doesn’t even know how many articles are in our Constitution. His lack of curiosity in the job he sought, or the ‘business’ of government that only he could fix, is going to blow up in his face. I am more discouraged than ever, based on his appointments, with the except of Priebus, who is the sane one in the asylum.
Please, those who are like-minded, do everything in your power to oppose the confirmation of Jeff Sessions as Attorney General. He was already denied a minor federal judgeship by a Republican congress, years ago, because he was proven a racist. Seldom does a deep south conservative politician become more liberal as they age. They just learn when to keep their mouths shut and try to be more ‘politically correct’. You know, that thing the orange one hates.
Write all your congressmen/women, regardless of party, and let them know this man is unacceptable for such a powerful position. The direction of our country’s law enforcement is at stake. This is serious business, people.

Regarding the NPR “report”. For all you open-minded people out there, remember, NPR is a left-leaning radio station. So, consider the source.
Also note that it says “reportedly”. That means that NPR is hedging. The information may or may not be true. I don’t think that anyone is accusing the Trump Foundation of accepting “donations” for special treatment by the US government. This is in sharp contrast to all the evidence that Hillary AND Bill have sold technology and favors to countries that are NOT our friends. And what about the $6 BILLION in State Department money that Hillary “misplaced, lost or simply mis-managed”? At the very least Hillary isa terrible money manager. At the worst, well, hopefully we will soon find out what the worst really is!
