TIME TO PERK UP PEOPLE!
I NOW KNOW HOW TO GET YOU TO COMMENT!!!!!!!
P O L I T I C ‘ S
Thanks to ALL who EXPRESSED in the COMMENT section or by EMAIL and OR UNSUBSCRIBED from LITTLE old ME!
You had PASSION on OVER DRIVE.
WELL,
SORRY POLITIC’S isNOT for ME!
Let’s get back to STYLE ~ GRACE and MANNER’S.
The Good Old ~ Fashion STUFF.
The ITALIAN has ALWAYS said, “Never talk POLITICS or your FRIENDS WIVES!
SO
What should we discuss TODAY?
Weather……..Holidays……….Friends……..OR………….MANNERS?
I pick FRIENDS to START!
SO, here we GO!
I adore this story.
We met over a parking space.I was not driving only a passenger.
A woman came up from behind our car to ask if we could move forward a tad……..
OF COURSE WE COULD!
Then she sat behind me for a seminar on DRESSING.
WE chatted a bit and rolled eyes.
Compared notes on how to be a good HOSTESS!
The hostess at the home we were in had NO CLUE!
End of SHOW which was WONDERFUL; we left one by one down the stairs back to our parked cars.
We exchanged phone numbers and perhaps emails.
I FOLLOWED UP.
Do you ever FOLLOW Up when you say you will call?
I
ALWAYS DO!
I think that is VERY RARE
that someone actually FOLLOWS through.
DO YOU?
WE met in SAN FRANCISCO for lunch and a Vintage Boutique Excursion.
Both of us had a BALL.
Time passes…….
I have her for LUNCH.
AGAIN
Another magical meeting.
Then out of the blue I receive a call last week to meet her at an ART GALLERY!
I say YES as it is in my BACKYARD ALMOST!
We
MEET & GREET
and
she bestows upon me a gift.
A WONDERFUL GIFT!
A
MONIES BRACELET!

I DO THINK IRIS would APPROVE!
My point when you see someone you LIKE
SEIZE THE MOMENT and get her details.
As we AGE it gets harder and harder to make Friends.
Or at least that is what I have noticed.
I had a FRENCH FRIEND.
Years ago when the BOYS were in elementary school.
Her impression of AMERICANS was we were so busy doing NOTHING!
We never had time for an impromptu coffee or gathering.
WHY IS THAT?
I think because as young Mother’s we were ALWAYS so SCHEDULED.Those are my thoughts anyway, do have your own ideas?

MANNERS
Let’s HIT that topic just for a moment.
Are they taught anymore?
When you go to someone’s house for dinner do you CALL or TEXT or EMAIL the next day?
Do you follow up with a hand written note?
JUST PLAIN CURIOUS I AM.
AS a MOTHER do YOU enforce the ELBOWS off the table?
Napkin on the LAP?
Do not start eating until EVERYONE Is SEATED?
IS THIS TAUGHT TO TODAYS YOUTH?
I WANT TO KNOW!
When your SONS friend gets married and you send a gift because you were INVITED to the wedding, but are unable to attend so you have The Gift mailed from the SHOP BEFORE the wedding.
AN item they had REQUESTED in their Gift REGISTRY.
Would you appreciate a THANK YOU?
IT has been FIVE MONTHS do you think there is still a chance?
Long time ago etiquette said YOU had a YEAR.
Does that still STAND anyone know?
I understand people WORK and have a house to RUN but a quick handwritten note just seals the deal for me.
That is how I was brought up and that is how I brought up my SONS.
GOOD MANNERS
should NEVER GO OUT OF STYLE.

LOOK even THEODORE has MANNERS.
Smiling for the camera!

EYES ON ICE CREAM.
“Don’t YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT IT!”
Utters THE ITALIAN!
Then again it is THE ITALIAN who he listens too.
Had it been me he would have WON!
FRAN , these photos of Theodore are for YOU!

This headband I bought at I.Magnin’s in about 1982.As an employee we got a BIG discount.
I do not even think I have ever worn it before this past event where I was STOPPED in my tracks many times.
Even SAN FRANCISCO HIGH SOCIETY noticed me and gave me a compliment!
34 years I had this JUST WAITING FOR IT’s DEBUT!
Do not be in a HURRY to TOSS things you haveNOT worn!
I go against THE RULE here.
If you BOUGHT it YOU LOVED IT.
Don’t be SO FAST to TOSS IT!

The Shirt was ANOTHER GIFT from a Divine Human Being (it is a man’s TUXEDO shirt) and the earrings were a BARGAIN.
The long, long scarf
I had to have.
Found on INSTAGRAM of ALL places.
It will keep my double chin and SWAN LIKE neck warm in STYLE!
I have taken a SABBATICAL from Instagram for TWO MONTHS.
I needed a rest from SOCIAL MEDIA.
Not a BIG fan of FACEBOOK these days.
Thinking of closing that account!
Do you think I will need to have a YOU TUBE TUTORIAL to learn HOW to SHUT it DOWN?
I will keep the BLOG ROLLING as long as YOU want me TOO.
Sometimes I wonder WHY I DO THIS?
It takes LOADS of TIME and PATIENCE!
BUT
I have received numerous emails over the years FROM YOU ALL telling me how much You ENJOY my Sense of HUMOR and STYLE!
And YOU KNOW WHAT?
That is what KEEPS me GOING cause THE ITALIAN thinks I am wasting my TIME!
You see his underwear isNOT being PRESSED
AND
his dinners may only be THREE courses now as it cuts into my COMPUTER time!
I AM A WORKING GIRL
Whether HE likes it or NOT!
AS for WEATHER in these CALIFORNIA PARTS………
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL in CALISTOGA YESTERDAY in the HEART of the NAPA VALLEY.

SENDING ALL YOU AMERICANS
A
HAPPY THANKS~GIVING!

Contessa Dahling,
I may have been one of your followers who unsubscribed, I recently unsubscribed from most of the blogs I was following.
I unsubscribed from them because I have been caring for my grand baby and didn’t have the time or energy to keep up with them. My sweetie pie comes first. I found myself staying up way too late to read the blogs and was dragging in the morning. So…………
I want you to know that I absolutely adore you, I wish you were my next door neighbor!!! I live in the country side, you cannot even see our next door neighbors they are far enough away. Surrounded by vineyards so it’s beautiful here. I miss the company of other women, the laughter and sharing and caring
If I did unsubscribe from your wonderful blog I’m going to re subscribe, because you were the most fun of all, my virtual friend!
I hope some day to meet you and share some Champagne!!
My best to you,
Joann

Ellie's friend from Canada says
Am so glad the Italian says no shoes worn inside in Italy. That’s what I remember my friend having said but wasn’t sure. I think yes, shoes off in some Oriental culture (Japan?). I thought shoes off might be American, too?
I am curled up under the blankets reading a Julia Child cookbook.
Just wanted to say don’t you worry about the “unsubscribers”. (almost sounds like “unbelievers”, doesn’t it?). I think that what was alienating in their eyes was comments about how could educated people vote that way. And of course they think of themselves as educated. And they are. At lunch, that day, I realized that to my friends the “means” justified the end. I am still debating this inside. I think it is more of a comment on them themselves than the process or the outcome or who won. In fact, I thought it was most telling about them. I am sure I looked a little askance. It spoke volumes about them.
Do and write what you enjoy and don’t worry about it. I’m not fond of the ‘net but really have come to appreciate the friendship from a few of the blogs, yours included.

Ellie's Friend From Canada says
Penelope – yes, Julia Child WOULD love Elizabeth! And I am happy to hear she was/is your cousin! I am just now delving into her book. So far the moussaka recipe sounds like it might be my speed. And, yes, you need to write a book ––Elizabeth’s suggestion is super!
Allena Behnke says
My mother used to press my father’s underwear! Really, Elizabeth, I teach my children that, MANNERS ARE EVERYTHING!” Even when you disagree with those that have a differing political opinion, the discussion has to be informative and calm. Sorry, some have unsubscribed, there is so muchto be learned from differing opinions. At a minimum, respect and acceptance (not tolerance) should be a guidance for our lives.
LA CONTESSA says
I BELIEVE YOU!
They did not have the INTERNET to waste a few hours on………..PLUS, it was done out of PRIDE.Wrinkles, stains it all is OKAY today……..HOLEs……..anything GOES!
XX
Ellie's friend from Canada says
Elizabeth,
I’ve done a little investigating. In some parts of America, it is de rigeur to take off one’s shoes: in other parts, just the opposite. In Canada, traditionally, take the shoes off. In Germany, Hungary, and I think Sweden, take the shoes off. In the Orient, take the shoes off. In Italy, keep them on.
I think in Italy, it may have a number of reasons:
walking on marble in barefeet may dull the marble from the oil on the skin;
you know where your shoes have been (as my Italian friend says);
it may be too intimate;
Can you ask the Italian?
I have had American friends who object to friends going barefoot because the skin’s oil can mark carpet.
Still, in Canada, I would find it impolite not to take shoes off, except perhaps at a dinner party or if the hostess suggested I keep them on. Perhaps in Canada, it originated because of snowy boots, etc.
Keep writing your blog!
P.S. I am the type who does accidentally walk through cow patties so I take them off always!
I’m thinking of having a white porcelain pot filled with Japanese style slippers.
LA CONTESSA says
The ITALIAN gave NO REASON just SAID, NO!
The shoes are NEVER REMOVED……….EVER!
AS he said this he nodded his head back and fourth in utter DISBELIEF!
I like the white .P POT with SLIPPERS IDEA!
Penelope Bianchi says
Here is what about shoes. Contessa’s point is this:
this hostess did not make her guests comfortable…..(MY mother was from the South and so that is an enormous step up)
She invited people to her house. She was NOT hospitable……no water, no snacks…..(I about fainted reading this!!); required removing shoes with no chair or bench to sit???
This is a person who is totally ignorant….(I know she didn’t do it on purpose!) of the most basic and obvious rules of behavior! It is really quite shocking! I hope Contessa told her. If someone doesn’t this dreadful behavior will go on and on. I am sure it would be a good deed. Please, Contessa….PLEASE! You will say it in the nicest way! You will be doing a public service! Preventing her from treating her guests so badly. This sounds like ignorance……poor woman…no one taught her! Please help this young woman….(or old….doesn’t matter)…..please tell her!!!!!
LA CONTESSA says
Someone pipped up…………..and she then offered HOT TEA!We had no place to put it but on our laps…………..SHE HAD NO IDEA and NO I didNOT TELL HER not my place too.YOU would understand had you been there……….her age My guess 55.
Penelope Bianchi says
CONTESSA.
MANNERS WILL PREVAIL……(I BELIEVE THAT) BECAUSE THESE THINGS DO!
MY MOTHER IN THE 50’S BOUGHT ANTIQUES FOR NOTHING! GROCERY MONEY!
MID CENTURY MODERN AND DANISH MODERN REIGNED!
MY MOTHER’S ANTIQUES…. ARE PRICELESS AND SOME I DONATED TO THE MUSEUM!!! IT WILL HAPPEN AGAIN!
TASTE WILL RETURN! WHEN SOFAS FALL APART AFTER TWO YEARS…..I AM HOPING THESE YOUNG PEOPLE WILL GET MAD! MY DAUGHTER HAS UPHOLSTERED FURNITURE WITH BEAUTIFUL PROPORTIONS…..THAT WERE HERE GRANDMOTHERS!!! I CONTINUE TO BELIEVE THAT ANTIQUES WILL LAST….AND NOW IS A GREAT TIME TO BUY THEM!!! BARGAINS TO BE HAD! JUST LIKE THE 50’S!!! GREAT AND TIMELESS AND BEAUTIFULLY MADE ANTIQUES ARE BARGAINS NOW!
THE SMART ONES WILL BUY!!!
LA CONTESSA says
HAPPY to SEE you GOT the CAPS DOWN!
I agree with you the FURNITURE of TODAY is VERY POOR QUALITY.I found the most beautiful velvet yesterday to slipcover two of my Mother’s chairs!Taking a PEnELOPE lesson here…………PEOPLE do you know she has a slip cover for Three seasons of the Four season year! For her living room furniture!I think this is BRILLIANT…………my only problem is I have NO ROOM To store them!

It’s always a good idea to follow up with an email or text when you meet someone who is like minded …. an opportunity to make another really good friend.
…. and, after any function that has been arranged by friends, I always send a thank-you card. After the wedding that we went to in October, I sent a card to the bride and groom, our good friend’s who are the parents of the groom and a card to the brides parents …… all had contributed to make it such a special day for us all so it is only right to thank them { in my book anyway !! } XXXX

Hi Contessa, my laptop is back so i could read your blog without squiting. I thought of you today. I was out on a walk with my son and we saw this black piggy wearing a collar in one of the country lanes. I wish I had my phone with me to take a photo of him (or her). Reminded me of Banksy.
I do agree that manners seem to have become a thing of the past, which is a pity. People seem to think it’s old-fashioned to be polite. Oh well, it’s what separates the wheat from the chaff, I suppose.

Good morning Elizabeth,

Have any of the unsubscribed peeps……..resubscribed?
Just curious.
Manners, I’m huge on them.
After a dinner party, years ago, I would post a thank you note or call the next day. A text now seems the modern manners equivalent of the call or note.
I believe you and I have very similar feelings on the subjects.
Call us old fashioned, but we like it just the way it was 🙂 .

I’m subscribing and am in recovery. I’m not an American and it is right that they should choose their own president but I too am GOBSMACKED! To imagine that someone who worked their entire life serving the public was treated so badly and not chosen in favour of a narcissistic boor is unbelievable. This goes further than uneducated white men. It goes to uninformed or misinformed or self centred “millenials” who can’t read beyond a 140 character twitter and educated white men who can’t stand the idea of a FEMALE president! Yes, sexism still exists as does racism! Four years of that man is too much to bear so thank you for any light respite from this debacle that you can provide is really really appreciated…

I do believe good parents still teach their children manners. I spent thanksgiving with two very young children with excellent manners. As someone else said “seeing you in my in box makes me smile”. How true. I could never pull off you elegant look….but my conservative self, who must have an inner diva, loves it!
We are all about manners at our house. My thirty something daughter called a few years ago to tell me she had met the love of her life….She then exclaimed…”and Mom he has manners”! He is now my favorite son in law. Love his mother too. She obviously raised him right.

It’s interesting to learn that despite having the numbers of votes, it is the electoral college who decides who wins! A grand source of corruption. I always thought the U.S. system meant that first past the post won the election. Something needs to be changed there! Yes, even we have gerrymandering (rigged), but I put that down to the inherent criminality in the Australian genetic makeup. Enuf of politics! Errk.
A while ago, met up with another WP blogger whilst I was doing chemotherapy. Thought it could be fun and a way of meeting likeminded persons. I forgot they were Aussies. Their manners went missing. I was interrogated, yet my quiet way of engaging them in conversation about themselves produced very little. It was a waste of time. At the tramstop later. I heard one say to the other person, “there’s a lot going on there”, referring to me. I thought, there’s not much going on with you! I unsubscribed from that blog quick smart. Don’t need people like that in my life. Manners. Being friendly and welcoming, and interested (as Iris Apfel would say) about the other person are very easy. Why do most find it difficult? Why chat at all?
Anyway, some online people are very nice. Thank goodness!
A belated Happy Thanksgiving, Contessa. I have a long list of things I’m grateful for. Ciao! ????????????????
