1.HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
Rebellious. Bold. Free.
2.WHAT INSPIRES YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE? My LIFE inspires my style. For years I lived near Washington DC (my husband was a politico) where everyone wants to be/look like Jackie Kennedy. There was such pressure to look a ‘certain’ way. After 12 years I felt so trapped in that world that I shaved my head, donated my ‘Jackie’ clothes to charity. The 13th year I got up one morning and threw a bunch of clothes in the front seat of my Mini Cooper, packed up Sally, my lab/husky, pushed a Merle Haggard CD in, and high-tailed it to Texas to live out my dreams.

3.WHAT ACCESSORY CAN YOU NOT DO WITHOUT?
Ripped jeans

4.FAVORITE COLOR?
ORANGE

5.DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE PIECE THAT DEFINES YOUR STYLE? I’d have to say my crazy hair, as well as my jeans, boots and funky accessories.

6.WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE STRENGTHS? My strength is that I don’t care what anyone thinks – I wear exactly what I want to wear. I’m always experimenting and not afraid to try something crazy and new. I’m always trying to mix prints or look for a way to wear something in a way it’s not meant for – cardigans upside down, a man’s dress shirt worn backwards – and my favorite – wearing something luxurious with something damaged.
7.DO YOU HAVE A STYLE ICON? – I have so many. My mother, my mother in law and oftentimes men/women on the street. I also can’t forget Iris Apfel and someone you’ve recently featured – LYN SLATER. I am a people-watcher, constantly looking for inspiration and of course my FAVORITE icon is YOU, DEAR CONTESSA!!!!
8.WHAT ARE YOUR BEAUTY ESSENTIALS YOU COULD NOT DO WITHOUT?
My Clinique skincare and makeup
9.DO YOU HAVE REPEAT OFFENDERS IN YOUR CLOSET IF SO WHAT ARE THEY?
Ripped jeans, worn boots, flowy tops and dresses.

10.WHAT ADVISE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN OVER 50 or over 40? That’s hard because I would never try to tell someone how to dress or what to wear. I guess my main advice is to be brutally honest with yourself regarding your body type. I don’t think it’s a good idea to show too much leg, cleavage or midriff although I absolutely have known some older women that could get away with midriff-baring tops or short skirts. If you are one of those lucky ones just pick one to feature – not two, and definitely not three. The trick is to KNOW if you can pull it off. If there is any doubt, then DON’T.

11.DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLE RULES THAT YOU LIVE BY? NO! I consider myself the ‘bad-girl’ of fashion. I am 100% sure this stems from my childhood of what ‘nice girls’ were supposed to wear and how I was expected to look as a Washington wife. I absolutely HATE the way society judges people on the way we look/dress. People decide if you’re rich, poor, professional, nice, mean, lazy or whatever ALL based on how you look/dress/what you drive. I simply don’t give a rat’s behind. I’m going to wear/do/drive whatever the heck I want.
12.WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONLINE GO TO SOURCES? Magnolia Pearl, Free People, Farm Girls and Fancy Frills, Rebel Mary’s
13.DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR DESIGNER THAT YOU ARE DRAWN TO? Robin Brown also known as Magnolia Pearl….I discovered her when I was still in Washington DC. For several years I was stalked by a neighbor (woman) and she had the police at my house every single day under false pretenses. When the police didn’t believe her she decided to change her focus to Social Services and my 7 year old son. I literally cleaned the bathtub, cooked dinner and went to bed at night in heels/pearls in terrible fear they’d actually show up. (My book ‘False Victim’ details this in full). It was during this period of my life I discovered Robin and her designs. On nights I couldn’t sleep I’d go to the Magnolia Pearl website and dream of her clothes, her farm and her lifestyle, in general. She gave me hope and literally changed my life. I’m visiting her store this summer.

It’s brutally real and true that most of us conform to society’s norms and live according to stereotypes which are reflected on the way we speak, we look, we dress, e.t.c. Well, at 56 I don’t give a hoot anymore about who judges me and who judges me not by the bags I carry, the car I drive, the rules I live by and so on. Kathie is true to herself and I commend her for that.

Esatto! Well, I remember back in the 90’s when we were living in Joburg, the ladies frequenting the shopping mall in a particular suburb, were dressed almost identically: same Jennifer Aniston hairstyle and hair colouring, same jeans, same shirt made of jeans fabric, same Sebago shoes, same perfume, same lipstick, same string of pearls, same mabe earrings, same handbag, same BMWs…To my horror, I used to call it ” The uniform”.
Needless to say, I adore OUR CONTESSA not just for her inimitable sense of style but especially for her incredible individuality and the same applies to all the special ladies she introduces to us in her blog. BRAVA BRAVISSIMA

Kathie is so interesting! I love reading about women who are their own person, living their own lives in their own way and not conforming to society’s or social media’s rules. Really interesting reading about Kathie. I long ago gave up caring what others thought, to the extent that I was told when in my early 20s that I’d never fit in (primarily because I didn’t feel the need to keep up with the Joneses, to enslave oneself and encumber oneself with mortgages etc etc just for appearance’s sake). Somehow I reached that stage very early in my life. I was touched in reading about the play Ali and Ryan have acted in –– it strikes such a chord with me about two people deeply in love with each other who don’t quite seem to connect. And then to read Cindy Hattersley’s Ageless Style. — what an absolute treat to read about Ali. Such a classically beautiful woman with simple, classic taste. I love Ali’s collection Ali4ibu. Well done, Contessa and Cindy!

I think of women who still wear ripped jeans as fashion followers not leaders. I put them in the category of the Emperor’s New Clothes.
judith says
I’m with Dawn on the ripped jeans. I detest that look for anyone, but especially for someone of “our” age. We do not need to copy one single fashion trend of teenagers. Ripped garments do not look comfortable, are not flattering, and are common. Sorry, but they are. It takes away from a well-groomed appearance from my viewpoint.
kathie says
If you don’t like this look then you probably would be equally appalled at my other favorite look – jeans that are 2 sizes too big. Ha!

Hi Contessa, a bit off subject of Kathie, I have a funny ripped jeans story. 1980’s my first Marlboro photo shoot as a producer wearing my oh so stylish 501’s with the knee ripped out. The cowboys (all real incidentally) lined up to meet the new photographer and his producer (me) and the lead cowboy came over to me with a tin can full of change and handed it to me and drawled, “the boys and I thought you might need this to buy a new pair of jeans”….. haven’t worn ripped jeans since.

I admire women who have figured out their style. I’m still struggling. My inner diva doesn’t seem to match my outer shape. Since retiring, I can wear whatever I want, but finding clothes that fit my 5″1″ frame of a certain age is frustrating. Yesterday, I drove over an hour to a store that carries petites only to find that they don’t even carry an XL size! The sales woman suggested a misses. I’m not getting taller! A tunic that is too long, quickly becomes a tent on my frame. Finding light-weight, flowy tunics that fit and are appropriate for Florida’s heat has become so frustrating, that I even thought about sewing my own. Frankly, I don’t see that happening! Back to t-shirts and shorts I guess. At least I can live vicariously through your posts!
LA CONTESSA says
HAVE YOU TRIED THE JUNIOR DEPARTMENT FOR THE BOHO FLOWING TOPS?MAYBE A LARGE IS NOT BIG ENOUGH BUT ITS WORTH A TRY AS NOW THERE ARE A LOT OF TUNIC TOPS OUT THERE.
OTHERWISE, WHIP OUT THAT SEWING MACHINE IT MIGHT BRING YOU GREAT JOY!

KATHIE TRUITT says
Kathy,
At 5’3”, I also have this problem. This is where my ‘sloppy style’ comes in handy. A lot of times I will just cut things off to size. Yes – you read that right. Girl, I just take the scissors and cut the pants off to the length I want. If it’s jeans, they’ll fray and look cool. If they’re linen, cotton or any other fabric I STILL cut them off. When you wash them they’ll have that ‘curled-up’ look, which i also love. I hope this helps.

Hi Elizabeth!
Kathie sounds like a fun fashion rebel! I admire anyone who knows themselves that well and has the confidence to carry on and wear whatever they want, and look so good doing it! I’m a bit of a chameleon and change my spots a lot- One day bohemian, one day preppy, one day buttoned up, one day classic dressy (but less of that these days living in a very laid-back coastal community). It can be confusing when I’m shopping! Seems like Kathie has it all figured out, and good for her! She has a look that makes her memorable, in a good way! I admire that in anyone!
I just attended the graduation for a charter school in our area that was for kids who have their own special needs, whether emotional or developmental, or from challenging family situations. They were so inspiring and interesting. Each one of them spoke, they each had such a unique and individual look – and confidence and a positive outlook! I was very impressed with them, and reminded how quickly most of us try to conform to the norm. These kids couldn’t conform and were presented with all kinds of problems because of it. But, when they were allowed to be themselves they flourished. It’s a wonderful thing to remember, even as a “grown up”!

I, too, love hats, especially hats that were made in Florence (I seem to encounter them in stores her not infrequently!). I loved the orange hat! The best hat I love is actually a red beret with a black leather border. I bought it on a shopping trip to Spokane. There were about 10 colours and I had a great time trying them all on. Presently, I noticed a very handsome man looking at me. Finally, he came over and said “You absolutely have to buy the red one”, then his wife pulled him away by his elbow. I laughed and bought the red one. I am afraid it may have been thrown out by my rampaging “friend”. Fingers crossed it still shows up. I also loved a tan suede Italian dome-shaped hat — hard to describe but sewn with seems so that it was the millinery double of il Duomo in Florence. Awol. And finally the missing cloche hat with the fabric flower that matches my purple coat. Oh heavens, where did my hats go??? P.S. what an exquisite complexion and eyes Kathie has — she would look beautiful in anything she wears!
