Jill, give us little bio of who you are PLEASE!
I live in the small city of Launceston in Tasmania (Australia’s island state).  I have been married to John for 44 years and I am the proud mother of two wonderful young men, Zac and Callum.  My daughter India sadly died of a brain tumour at age 8 in 2001.  I am also Mimi to little Harry (2).  I have been employed in a variety of fields, working for Kodak in sales and admin for many years, also banking and in latter years when I returned to the workforce, in retail fashion.  I currently work two days a week at a local card and gift store.  I enjoy travelling and gaining an insight into different cultures and have visited 40 countries in many parts of the world.
  HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN BLOGGING
AND
WHAT MADE YOU THINK “I CAN WRITE A BLOG?”
I have been blogging for seven years.
  In truth I started as a challenge for myself as I turned 60 to prove that (with my limited computer skills) I could do this blogging thing.
  I recall contacting Tamara Beardsley and her advice was to write whatever brings you joy, which is what I still do today.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
As many women find, I feel my style has evolved over time.
  I find as I age I am more willing to experiment with styles the younger me would never have considered.
  Today my style is a mix of arty, avante-garde and quirky with a splash of the classics and vintage thrown in.
I finally know my body shape and what really suits me best and I dress to please me.
 WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACCESSORY?
This is a hard one as I love and wear them all – beads, bracelets, statement ear-rings, scarves, belts and gloves.  I adore hats and have quite a collection.
A selection of sunglasses is also a must, as I have found as I age that my eyes are now more sensitive to bright light.
  I am a great believer in the power of well chosen accessories to take the most basic of outfits to the next level.
HOW ABOUT COLOR COMBINATIONS?
Black and white is always high on my list.
I also love the romance of dark florals.
  Chartreuse is my favourite colour, often combined with white.
  I also wear quite a lot of black, adding interest with textures and shapes.
WHO INSPIRED YOU AS A CHILD?
I really can’t recall any specific inspiration as a child, although my mother always loved clothes, so maybe my interest started there.
Today, I have several muses,

Beatrix Ost,
to name but a few.
  DO YOU FOLLOW FASHION TRENDS?
No, not any more,  these trends are so fickle, far better to find your own style.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR SKINCARE REGIME,HAS IT CHANGED OVER THE YEARS?
My skin care routine is quite a simple one.  I use Cetaphil to remove my make-up with a re-usable pad, as well as LÓreal, eye make-up remover, followed with a micellar water, then a moisturiser and eye cream.  My products vary from Clarins to LÓreal, sometimes others.  My most important item is sunblock, something I wish I had started as a teenager.  At this time I am not using a serum, I know I probably should, any suggestions would be most welcome.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LIPSTICK?
My all time favourite lipstick is Rodin – my colour is Tough Tomato, an orange red, as it lasts and lasts.  I always use a lip pencil to both outline my lips and colour them in before adding the lipstick using a lip brush.
  I am lucky as I rarely have a problem with lip bleed.
YOU RECENTLY THIS PAST YEAR WENT TO CUBA.
WHAT STOOD OUT THE MOST TO YOU ABOUT CUBAN WOMEN?
I was fortunate to visit Cuba, in March 2020.  The one thing that stood out for me was the resilience of the Cuban women.  The lives of many of the women I met were difficult, due to shortages of so many of the things we take for granted.  One of the first things I noticed was the absence of shops selling clothing and other everyday items.  I asked our lovely guide where women found their clothes, on the black market I was told.
HOW MUCH JOY DOES YOUR CLOTHING BRING TO YOU?
I do enjoy my clothing, Not just as a way of covering my body but as a means of self expression.
This became more pertinent to me as the dark clouds of grief (following the loss of my daughter)  lifted and I re-discovered the absolute pleasure of creative dressing again.
DO YOU PONDER OUTFITS OR JUST GET DRESSED?
Most days I definately ponder.
If I have a special event, I can play for hours composing the outfit until it simply sings.
I FEEL YOU ARE AN ARTIST WITH YOUR CLOTHING.
HAS ANYONE MENTIONED THIS TO YOU?I KNOW YOU LOVE YOUR GARDEN.
WHAT FLOWER BEST DESCRIBES WHO YOU ARE AND WHY?
Thank you Elizabeth, yes I have been told that before.  I have no skill with a paint brush, so clothing is my medium.  I do love my garden and grow a  variety of blooms.  Of all the flowers in my garden, the one that describes me is the Oriental Poppy (I even have one in black and white).  I feel it describes me as it likes to make a statement, is quite individual, sometimes is clad in bright flamboyant colours, but only for a short time.
WHAT PART OF THIS AGING PROCESS SHOCKED YOU THE MOST?
HAVE YOU COME TO TERMS WITH IT?
DOES IT HELP TALKING TO OTHERS?
The aging process as such really doesn’t bother me too much, it is an inevitable part of life.  I still colour my hair as nature has not provided the gorgeous silver and soft grey I so admire on others.  The one thing that annoys me the most is the heavy hooded eyes – a family trait that seems to get worse over time.  Surgery is an option – not ready to go there yet, but will if it affects my eye sight.  I do find it helpful to talk with friends and hear others’ stories, most of us have the same issues.
ON A SCALE OF ONE TO TEN
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE THE IMPORTANCE OF GIRLFRIENDS IN YOUR LIFE?
I would rank my girlfriends right near the top as they are very important in my life.
  Nothing like our girlfriends to share the joys and sorrows of our lives.
 ANY GOALS FOR 2021?
Due to the uncertainty of these times I don’t have any particular big goals for 2021.  I hope to travel overseas again (not sure about 2021), possibly to Japan for the Autumn colours and to Europe again.  I also plan to explore more of Australia.  I really would like to improve my photography and editing skills.

ONE LAST TIDBIT IS THE PASSING OF MY CARDIGAN CORGI Sir Winston ON DECEMBER 3,2020.
HE was MY FIRST CORGI and THE LOVE OF MY LIFE!HE was constantly underfoot and at my side.
HE WAS MY COMPANION 24/7 from feeding the chickens to working in the GARDEN or in my way in the KITCHEN.
His LIVER had enlarged and his kidneys had become smaller and the LOSS of BONE DENSITY in his BACK was VERY evident in his XRAYS.
He could barley walk.
 I AM AT A LOSS WITHOUT HIM.
READY for a NEW YEAR!
BE WELL.
HANG IN THERE EVERYONE!

  2. I adore her spunk! Love her in that black and white number with the straw cap. I can’t wait to see her garden. Looks like we grow similar roses…I can’t bear seeing those pictures of Winston. Summer was just talking about Banksy and Winston yesterday. He was a darling dog. My neighbor the dog trainer always says you have one great dog in your lifetime. We had Bridger you had Winston. We love Beau to death but Bridger was one in a million. I am going to pop over later today and read her blog!

    I am exhausted right now. I’ve been baking and cooking for 5.5 hours and I’m ready to fall asleep on the couch. Tomorrow is our last day of quarantine. Has to stay in because a student in my son’s class tested positive for Covid. It will be good to get out of the house.

    • HE WAS 12 or 14………..CAN YOU BELIEVE THE VET HAD A DIFFERENT DATE THEN I HAVE IN MY HEAD!
      HE LIVED A GOOD LIFE………AND WAS JUST THE BEST COMPANION FOR ME.
      I LOVED HOW HE DID WHAT WE CALLED CIRCUS DOG SITTING UP ON HIS BACK LEGS!
      HE OF COURSE has not done that in years……due to the ARTHRITIS.

    So sorry about little Winston. Although I never met his sweet self I feel I know him from his photos. They always captured these three things about him I think:
    1. He loved sunshine and naps
    2. He loved his other fur baby friends(not sure if Bansky could qualify as a baby but he loved him anyway)
    3. He loved and adored being loved by you

  9. First of all to the lovely Jill, I am so sorry for your loss. You obviously persevered and emerged as a beautiful flower in spite of your sorrow. Those things shape us and I believe, help to prepare us for what is to come. I like your apparent zest for life, as evidenced in your fashion choices. There is a bit of whimsy that made me smile as I looked at your photos. As a passionate gardener myself, I cannot wait to see your garden creations. Thank you so much for sharing with us today on the Contessa’s blog, and educating us a bit about Tasmania. I love to travel as well, loved Cuba, and had the same observations as you. I hope to run into you somewhere once it is safe to return to globe-trotting. You seem like such a fun person and someone with whom I can relate. Don’t worry about coloring your hair, as many of us are not blessed with pretty gray and silver, so we have to deal with that as well. As to a serum, may I suggest either the Obagi or the Mad Hippie Vitamin C serum. Use a few drops first thing in the morning after cleansing.

    Now for Elizabeth, you have hit the ball out of the park on this one! Jill is delightful in the same way you are. She is fearless in fashion and seems very confident in her style. And her red hair is amazing! So many of us continue to need inspiration, and you provide it for us in spades. I hope you are holding up okay after Little Winston went to Doggy Heaven. I have been thinking of you since the 3rd and wishing you well. The photos are a fitting tribute to him. May the void left behind by his absence in time be filled with pleasant and amusing memories of him. RIP, Winston.

      SO I LOOKED UP THE VITAMIN C serums………..and have ordered the MAD HIPPIE!NOT as expensive as all the others……we will start LOW and GO HIGH if need be!I just finished BEAUTY COUNTER VIT C which I liked.I LOVED THE VESSEL it came in but none of them have been as good as my GERMAINE de CAPUCCINI I had years ago.I was told they stopped making it?ANYONE KNOW?I think Cindy told me they should be 15% or above in VITAMIN C.I could not find the ingredients on MAD HIPPIE ON LINE!

      • I did pop over to Cindy’s blog , her gal was both so stylish and so very interesting , those wonderful textiles , in her home and her clothing and accessories.
        Our house is from the Victorian era dating back to 1880. Fancy you contemplating retiring to Tasmania once . As for the rain , I wouldn’t say it rained excessively here , in fact some years very little.

  15. Jill, is so original and delightful. Her skirts are works of art. Can’t wait to see more of her garden! The loss of Sir Winston saddened me and brought back the pain of our losing Commander Cody, a chocolate lab, in Dec.a few years ago. We have had 4 dogs but Cody was a gentleman. We were in Cuba in March of 2018. We stayed in an air BnB. We had 2 sisters, nieces of the landlord, come in each morning for breakfast and to tidy the rooms. They were beautiful young mothers who told us a lot about their lives. They had the whitest teeth! Thanks to family in Miami.
    I loved the picture someone painted of you, Jill and Tamera Beardsley together, all beautiful, unique women.

    You made me cry over Sir Winston. My heart was broken reading of his passing.

    I know what you are going through with the loss of your best buddy. Still reeling from Biscuit’s passing in Feb and still cry. I don’t think one ever totally gets over the loss of a beloved companion, but the joy they bring is indescribable.

    I like to think how lucky we are – you with Sir Winston and me with Biscuit to have had them in our lives. They were there in our down times and up times, noticing every little thing about us. A soulmate in a dog.

      I am sharing for you to ENJOY how some woman can put an ensemble together!
      I would imagine Jill is given a compliment by complete strangers most days………….as I am.We use our wardrobes to enhance our days meaning we do bring JOY TO OTHERS!MY favorite compliments are ALWAYS IN THE PRODUCE SECTION OF MY GROCERY STORE!!!!
      Most people do not CARE how they LOOK or what they wear………..WE HAVE BECOME A VERY RELAXED SOCIETY and ANYTHING GOES!

  26. First of all, I am so sorry about your Sir Winston. That has to be so painful. I know how much you love your dear animals. He was given the best life with you.

    Jill, what fun. First of all that garden. Love, love, love it. Then Tasmania, I’ve always wondered where that was because Merel Oberon was born there so it’s always been such an exotic place to me. Of course Jill’s style reminds me of you Contessa. That turban? Pure Contessa. Oh you know what knocks me out? Jills Muff. Love that whole look. I’m surprised you don’t wear one Elizabeth. BTW, while I’m typing I’m sitting next to the rose designed tea cup you gave me years ago. I love it even more because it’s so classy it doesn’t drip! Back to Jill. She has style that has no end. Such fun to see. I love the faux fir accents. The whole package!!! Just perfect for your Ageless Style. Truly Jill has got it in spades!!! Great choice!!!

    • Thank you so much Sandra , I must agree I can see our Contessa with a muff , just her style. Mine is also practical on a Winter drive in an old car without heating.
      Another bit of movie trivia , Errol Flynn was also a Tasmanian born in Hobart in 1909.

    we spoke of your loss and obviously a deep one. what a companion he was to Theodore & Banksy, they must feel the loss too.

    As I write my Cardigan pup is at my side, and was thinking recently, “the loss of you will break me”, such short lives. Just adore Corgi’s, and having met Sir Winston, he was particularly lovely and smart. Hope you will find another dear little one who will heal the raw edges, you have so much love to give.

  36. Well. I don’t know what it says about me that after reading this lush, fascinating interview and being completely captivated by Jill–as a woman and artist–the first thing I want to comment on is the brief mention of her beloved India and your precious Winston.
    Since I’ve talked on the phone to you, I’ve been able to express my heartache for the passing of Winston and tell you that Winston always popped out of your photos. I was so in love with his little cute body. and I feel so sad that it was his time to cross over to the other side. But moving on, I want to thank you for these interview questions because you were able to give us readers a wonderful insight into Jill and what an amazing woman she is. First of all–I honor what I know personally, is a long arduous grief journey in her past. And I loved hearing her refreshing views on aging and beauty. I also noted that when she traveled to Cuba her sensitivity shone through when she slowed down to ask about the shopping experiences of the Cuban women, and noted how different their experiences are from ours. A little fact that hopefully reminds us to be grateful.
    I agree with you Elizabeth. I also view Jill as an artist with clothing, similar to you. And I —someone who lacks that artistry with my own wardrobe–truly appreciates each of you as bright lights in the world.

  37. I greatly enjoyed reading about Jill and loved her beautiful skirts and distinctive, unique style. I am so sorry about your daughter, Jill, and the dark days of that time. There really is no explanation for such things — just random and damned bad luck.

    Elizabeth, I am a Scottish terrier person myself (or at least my mother was) but I grew up babysitting a girl who would refuse to go to bed — that is when I called out the reinforcements and asked the family corgi to put her to bed. well that corgi named Taffy herded her right to bed by nipping at her heels. I am sorry about Winston — corgis have a special place in my heart and I know in yours too. Are the other animals missing Winston? I imagine so.

      AS YOU KNOW THEY ATE A SECOND DINNER WITH US OFF A SILVER FORK THAT HAS THEIR OWN KNIFE REST!
      BANKSY is pulling the TAFETTA table cloth that sits in front of his bed EVERY NIGHT TO HIS BED………
      I consider that HIS MOURNING for SOME REASON!
      THEODORABLE,continues to bring me TREATS at NIGHT and he is on my LAP when he is NOT OUTSIDE HUNTING SO YES!
      I HAD A BEAUTIFUL TRIO OF ANIMALS THAT GOT ALONG PERFECTLY!
