This has to be one of the most BEAUTIFUL desserts I have seen this HOLIDAY SEASON!
AND NO I didNOT MAKE IT!
But I know the lady who did!
She taught the ITALIAN to make BREAD!
She is also a SELF TAUGHT PASTRY CHEF!
This is CALLED A PAVLOVA.
AUSTRALIA and New Zealand FIGHT OVER WHO INVENTED IT I BELIEVE!
It was named after the FAMOUS BALLERINA……..ANNA PAVLOVA.
I do make these as they are simple and delicious plus for me they are GLUTEN FREE!
Plus, I had wanted to be a BALLERINA for my career but that DREAM did not come TRUE!
TOO TALL and NOT GOOD ENOUGH I did DANCE in THE MARIN CIVIC BALLET
and
San Francisco BALLET productions of THE NUTCRACKER for YEARS!
I have very FOND memories of those performances and the BEHIND THE SCENES DRAMA!
SO instead I went with another passion of mine FASHION MERCHANDISING.
I MET MY BELOVED ITALIAN IN THAT FIELD!
HE ARRIVED FROM ITALY ON AN AIRPLANE IN APRIL of 1984!
WE BOTH WORKED FOR AN ITALIAN WHOLESALE HANDBAG COMPANY that was hidden away in the PRODUCE SECTION of OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA!
YOU might recognize the NAME
THE GUCCI ACCESSORY COLLECTION.
THESE were the handbags and accessories you saw in the 1980’s in department stores and speciality shops.
Remember when the LOGO was all the GG’s in BROWN and or BLUE?
Well chances are if I SEE THOSE BAGS TODAY and they are popping up in VINTAGE STORES;
I can SPOUT the STYLE NUMBER OFF!
1001-1 = BROWN Duffle Bag
1001-2 = BLUE DUFFLE BAG
TRIVIA FUN FACT!
NOW, speaking of THAT ITALIAN here he is BELOW!

Here we have a WREATH made by my neighbor DIANE for THE PASSING of WINSTON!
The white FLOWERS are REAL and quite lovely!
THE ITALIAN had just hung it see the wire?
So he was inside and I was outside!
PEEK A BOO!!!

Here is my bed………
THE LEOPARD PILLOWS ARE FOR SALE ON MY GARDEN CLUB SITE which YOU PEOPLE cannot access!
They are NEW been in a closet for awhile I am selling them for $40.00 each.

I do need a NEW HEADBOARD but would feel BAD to cover my TAPESTRY.
Look at that picture.
Two birds the MALE on the RIGHT chatting it up with the LADY!
IN NATURE THE MAN IS ALWAYS MORE BEAUTIFUL THAN THE FEMALE!
Surrounded by lushness of GREEN PLANTS.
A CASTLE IN THE DISTANCE………
OH SIGH……..

MY GRAND DOGS………NOLLIE on the BOTTOM her SON and ONLY PUPPY on TOP with TONQUE OUT!
They are in the car headed SOUTH for the 9 hour ride!Looks like they know they are in for the long HAUL!
One could say they “ARE HOLDING HANDS!”
OR
“HERE WE GO AGAIN!”
OUR TREE THIS YEAR!
I HAD A READER from SPAIN mention she does OIL PULLING NIGHTLY!
I had NEVER heard of that and am NOW A FAN!
Oil pulling involves swishing oil around the mouth, using it like a mouthwash. It has been used for thousands of years as an Indian folk remedy.
In order to oil pull, you put a tablespoon of oil in your mouth, then swish it around for 15–20 minutes.
The main benefit of doing this is that it reduces the amount of harmful bacteria in the mouth.
There are hundreds of different types of bacteria in your mouth. While many of them are friendly, others are not.
The bacteria in your mouth create a biofilm on your teeth, a thin layer known as plaque.
Having some plaque on your teeth is perfectly normal, but if it gets out of hand, it can cause various problems, including bad breath, gum inflammation, gingivitis and cavities.
The way oil pulling works is simple — when you swish the oil around your mouth, the bacteria get swept away and dissolve in the liquid oil.
Oil pulling should work with pretty much any oil, but extra-virgin coconut oil is a popular choice due to its pleasant taste.
It also has a favorable fatty acid profile, containing high amounts of lauric acid, which has antimicrobial properties (1Trusted Source).
SUMMARYOil pulling is an ancient Indian remedy to clean the mouth and teeth. It is claimed to reduce the risk of cavities, gingivitis and bad breath.
Oil pulling is incredibly simple:
Put about a tablespoon of oil in your mouth
Swish the oil around your mouth for about 15–20 minutes
Spit out the oil, then brush your teeth
It’s best to spit the oil out onto a piece of paper and put it in the trash — the fat might otherwise clog your pipes over time.
There is no need to use a lot of force. If oil pulling causes pain in your facial muscles, relax a bit. Try using less oil next time and don’t swish it around too forcefully.
Some people say it’s best to oil pull on an empty stomach, before brushing your teeth. Many do it while showering or bathing in the morning.
I HAVE GOOGLED THIS INFORMATION ABOVE!

Sandra Sallin says
Oil pulling for 20 minutes so my mouth feels fresh? Are you kidding me? My mouth feels fine. I can barely brush my teeth for two minutes let along GAG and swish oil in my mouth for 20 minutes. That pavlova is gorgeous, and it’s a brilliant idea to do it as a wreath.
I read about oil pulling a few years ago, but the point was to exercise the facial muscles to prevent sagging. I probably should have started doing it then, because I am getting a little jowly.
Happy holidays, or bonnes fêtes, as they say here.
PS: Audrey Hepburn also wanted to be a ballerina and also was too tall. You’re in good company.
LA CONTESSA says
MY READER MUMBAI DID MENTIONED THAT AS WELL…….I think she said it’s “A GOOD WORK OUT for FACIAL MUSCLES!”

Ballerina, huh? I tried lessons once, and have some funny stories we can share when we meet. Took up tap dancing at 60 and did it until 70 – dancing with kids for the most part. Not good, but had a blast, and great exercise. We have lots of stories to exchange for sure.
What a lovely gift for the loss of Sir Winston. It brings joy at a time of loss. Great friend to have made that for you.
THAT TREE! It is totally smashing…must’ve taken hours to get all the decorations on it…WOW. And the cake….I agree one of the most beautiful I have ever seen. RECEIPE? I am horrid at dessert making with the exception of biscotti’s…made batches for gifts this year.
Happy holidays my dear friend, and tons of laughter, good food, music and yes, a twirl or two. Love

Hi – In January I’ll be the big 6-0! You are a bit ahead of me.
And yes, still tapping! I love it! Been at it since the age of four. However, with this Covid business no tapping has been happening, so we will see if classes can come together when we get the okay.
I too am familiar with oil pulling but have never tried it. Will have to give it a go.
Your bed and tapestry look divine with the leopard pillows. Wreath on the door is gorgeous and GP so cute- nice to see him. Where are you headed south with the doggies? Of course I always love getting a peek and Banksy Boy. Much love to you all, Lisa

Hello Contessa, I can’t imagine having a mouthful of oil–it seems like it would make one gag. Perhaps I will try it on a particularly strong day.
I wonder if those dogs still know that they are related. At least they seem to get on well together.
Your tree is kind of amazing, and I am happy to see a colorful one after all those “refined” white and monochrome ones.
I hope you and your family have a Happy Holiday Season!

Elizabeth I hope you and your lovely and charming Italian have a wonderful Christmas. I know it will be different this year but I think we can all make the best of it and enjoy the spirit of the day.
We are going to have hot bowls of chili, outside by the fire pit, for our Christmas dinner this year! It sounds too good to be true, no days standing in the kitchen. Although I will miss setting the table.
Anyway, all my best to you and yours. Merry Christmas.

Wishing you the happiest Christmas
I’ve been silent for a while – but not in my own life: – politically it’s been a busy year – the political work we do in my Parliament has continued for the small nations near to Australia- albeit
in more difficult circumstances.
And Tomorrow I will host lunch at my house for all the people I know who don’t get to celebrate Christmas.
It’s the only Touch of Christmas they have and it puts warmth into lives.
It’s always a special and happy day.
I give a gift to each of them.
Then on Christmas Day my own family celebrates our family Christmas. It’s big this year.

The cake looks delicious! I love the fruit arrangement on top. Looks like Banksy has good taste and is going for the most luxurious fabric in the room upon which to nap! How smart of him. The Italian looks like one of Santa’s elves, peeping through Winston’s wreath on the door. And your tree is spectacular; I would much rather see a colorful, decorated tree than those matchy, color-coordinated, perfect ones. Where are the dogs going on their trip? And yes, oil-pulling is an ancient Ayurvedic practice believed to pull impurities from the entire body. Ten minutes should be plenty; you can then spit it directly into a trash can, which will keep your pipes from getting clogged. I have tried this for several months at a time and haven’t done so in awhile; probably ran out of oil in the bathroom and didn’t get around to replacing it. Let us know if you see any results. Thank you, Contessa, for all of the beauty, humor, entertainment, stories and all of the events you share with us here. You have been a beacon of light and hope during a year of uncertainty. A wreath told me about your loss of Winston and I can only say “I am sorry”.
I was surprised that you mentioned oil-pulling and so many bloggers leaped up. As it is an alopathic remedy …good thing takes time.

a glass of warm water and before breakfast)

Ciao Bella,
Your Xmas decorations are capital-f Festive, for sure! I did a double-take with the door wreath, thinking the Italian’s smiling face was the centrepiece, haha!! Yes, the pavlova is much beloved about the place here, and is indeed Mr. P’s party trick dessert but he hasn’t pulled one out for a few years now … for no good reason but this is a reminder to perhaps rectify matters. Not this year, as our Christmas has shrunk down to two people, including myself, so it would be unseemly to try to polish off a whole pav together. Although I’m seriously contemplating a last-minute small glazed ham if I can get my mitts on one at this very late juncture!
Your grand-dogs look a bit wrung out so a bit of a holiday would be just the ticket. But they are lovely cuddling together. Re the oil pulling, yes, I’d heard of this, too. Several years ago I went a bit hippy-herbal and started making my own, ahem, Beauty Products and this came onto my radar. I tried it a couple of times but am dead-set lazy and couldn’t keep it going for very long. An electric toothbrush 3-minute cycle is as much as I can put up with and I multitask some calf raises or grand battements to pass the time. (Possibly the only exercise I’ve done all this year after the novelty of zoom dance classes wore off …)
I don’t generally broadcast this but I don’t use toothpaste, just dip a wet toothbrush into bicarb soda and away I go. Some get alarmed by this, citing abrasiveness and what not, but my dentist is impressed by my fangs and doesn’t get pushy about it. It’s very good at keeping them whiter, especially for dealing with tea/coffee/red wine, just enough to keep that at bay, not to get the bleached look which doesn’t anyway have the same sort of wide-spread appeal in this country as yours. Once you get over the shock of salty instead of sweet/minty, the taste becomes perfectly normal and it might be worth a try rather than fussing with whiteners?
Have a wonderful break and I Iook forward to your sunny posts in the new year!

Got my modest Christmas gifts mailed by a friend yesterday. Was going to send chocolate to my nephew in S.F. but places were sold out!
LA CONTESSA says
I HAVE HEARD A LOT OF PLACES ARE SOLD OUT!GUESS THEY DIDNOT BUY AS MUCH THIS YEAR…………
THE NEWS IS GETTING WORSE…….WITH VACCINES NOT ARRIVING IN THE AMOUNT STATED AND A NEW FORM OF CORONA IN THE UK!!
THANK YOU FOR THE XMAS PHOTOS!!
I SPIED YOU IN THE REFLECTION OF AN ORNAMENT!!!

Maybe the chocolate shops made less this year! Well, I sent him a chocolate bar from here, a few candy canes and some mini chocolates. The postage was high but it’s the thought that counts.
Things are getting worse and the “U.K.” strain. is more contagious than normal covid.
Took bird photos today while sitting watching for the Christmas Bird Count– the weather has turned cold and lots of snow on the way. Time to make soup ….
Stay safe — don’t take chances. Merry christmas — I think you’ll love the free Bocelli concert! Some9one just phoned to say she is bringing me a turkey dinner! great news! Ann

Hello Elizabeth, you are absolutely correct both Australia and New Zealand lay claim to have invented the pavlova as the she toured both countries in 1926. It is something I rarely make other than at Christmas when it is chocolate and raspberry. i can imagine you as a pretty ballet girl in your tutus.
I did so like the photo of your Italian and the wreath . Your colourful Christmas tree is simply wonderful , just as i imagined.
Banksy is such a character and does as he is asked , I’m impressed.
Thank you for the joy you bring with your blog . Stay safe and well . Wishing you both a Happy Christmas . xx

Hi Elizabeth from Canada. Sorry to hear that Winston has passed on. It is always hard to loose a pet they are family. I’ve never heard of oil pulling but will certainly give it a try. Your tree looks very tall and beautiful. We have a nine foot tree this year and I love it. All the lights and decorations of Christmas just lightens our spirits don’t you think? That is a beautiful tapestry behind your bed you definitely don’t want to hide that at all. Thanks for all your wonderful blogs this year I always look forward to them. I wish you and the Italian a wonderful Christmas and everyone a better 2021. Dawn

Dearest Contessa,
Your posts unfailingly bring smiles and joy and laughter… and despite all the headwinds of life, a courageous optimism and ‘onward we go’ spirit. There are two famous lions in front of the NY Public Library, their names are Patience and Fortitude… excellent qualities for lions (and people) to have. The pavlova looks divine…I have never made and now want to try and emulate the photo. Also have never tried oil pulling (what a name), but just added extra virgin coconut oil to my grocery list : ) The tree is marvelous and magical, the elf in the window wreath so adorable, and the live action reel of Banksy rooting around your bedecked table made me hold my breath!! And then swoon to witness his intelligence–the straight-on look at his mother and then off to his proper bed. I want to write this story : )
Merry, Merry Christmas, and let us hope, a better new year for all..
XOXO

15-20 MINUTES???!!! Do you mean seconds?!!!! I think you mean minutes, but just checking. I’ve heard of oil pulling but had no idea what it was. If it’s 15-20 seconds, I’d give it a try … but MINTUES?!!! Ok, now I’ve forgotten the content of the rest of your post. Let me review. Ok I’m back. That Pavlova is beautiful. I had a wonderful Pavlova at your house … that you made. And, was delighted to learn it’s gluten free. Not that I’m gluten free, but I agonize over what to serve gluten free friends. Not that there’s been any serving of friends this year. And, your tree … spectacular! How tall is it? Such an interesting shape. And, the ornaments … oh my! Fabulous. I’m sad that this is your last post of the year … but not sad to see this year come to an end. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year … I look forward to your posts (and return to Instagram, we hope) in 2021! Cheers! xo

WOW. That dessert is GORGEOUS. If it tastes half as good as it looks, the “pavlova” is as superb as the danseuse! And your tree… what can I say? I would expect nothing less of you and the Italian. It’s magnificent and fun!
Sending holiday hugs and best wishes for a happy. healthy and much more “normal” new year.

I used to do the oil pulling thing and thought it was brilliant and I do not know why I stopped. I am going to start again now that you have reminded me.. I wrote about it in a post years ago on the benefits of coconut oil. The link is below if you want to read it. I still use coconut oil a bit, but not as much. However I think the oil pulling is worth it. Even a few minutes makes a difference. Have a wonderful Christmas and thank you for your friendship. XXX

Okay trying again for the fourth time. That pavlova looks amazing. I think I did make one waaay back when. Your tree is amazing. Who decorates the top? Every year when I see your tree it makes me think of my kids begging for colored lights. But guess what now that they have there own trees only white lights. But I know they would love your tree!

Your tree is so beautiful. I have read about the oil pulling but haven’t ever tried it, your recommendation makes me consider it-maybe. The beautiful wreath honoring your sweet Winston is so very lovely. I always enjoy the glimpses you offer of you dear family-the Italian peeking through the wreath, your grand dogs, and your dear pig! I look forward to your posts and love reading what you’re doing in the garden. Wishing you a Happy New Year!
