Once a month Cindy Hattersley AND I pick a LOVELY WOMAN or MAN to interview for our AGELESS STYLE series.

This month I found Jennifer Butler in my instagram scroll!

I was immediately drawn to her LOOK and ENERGY!I noticed another AGELESS STYLE woman I had featured in the past was following her.So, I inquired with ANDREA of SERRAHNA  and TRA LA we have this lovely woman JENNIFER FEATURED this month!Jennifer helps her clients find their authentic beauty through the secret power of their colors and design.She is located in Los Angeles,California and also gives seminars on-line to help YOU find your BEST COLORS and LOOK!

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

I would describe my style as Artistic/Creative/Authentic.

I use the coloring and design of my own DNA as my foundation.

I feel dressing is an ageless art!

YOU TEACH YOUR CLIENTS HOW TO WEAR “THEIR” COLOR.

AS A YOUNG CHILD/YOUNG WOMAN DID YOU ADORE COLOR AND FASHION?

Yes. My mother started a fabric store when I was eleven years old in order to support her six children going to college! My job in her store called—The Calico Cat— was to create the window displays and to do merchandising and selling. At an early age, she took me to the New York fabric market where I fell in love with the color, design, and texture of the fabric.  From there I stepped into the New York Fashion scene landing a job and receiving training at Bloomingdales. That was really the beginning of it all.

WHAT FASHION MAGAZINES SPEAK TO YOU TODAY FOR WOMEN OVER 50?

I don’t let age limit me.

I look at all the magazines.

I feel if you understand your coloring and your personal design silhouette, you can interpret fashion from many age groups.

WHERE DO YOU FIND YOUR INSPIRATION IN TODAYS WORLD?

I find inspiration in people, cultures, and the world around me. I love what mother nature has given us. I think music, poetry, and dance are intricately woven together with fashion. They’re part of the healing arts. I love museum exhibits. I love watching sports and listening to singers because I study personality. I also love watching a family out and about at my local farmer’s market that has its own intimately woven sense of style! When you see whole families together, you really observe the thread of personalities and how it relates to each person’s style.

I do pay attention to Vogue.com in order to stay up-to-date on all the fashion trends but I don’t allow “trends” to rule or limit me.

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE CASUAL LAID BACK LOOK OF TODAY WITH MOST WEARING EXERCISE CLOTHING FOR DAY-TO-DAY LIVING?

Regarding casual clothing, it is often a sign of comfort, warmth and friendliness!  I feel it is important to have options when I dress but just because you are comfortable doesn’t mean you can’t look fabulous!  I think it’s very possible to find beautiful colors and silhouettes that can create a flattering, expressive, pulled-together look even if you are just in your yoga clothes.I often wear my sweats with dressier accessories such as hats, silk scarves, jewel or pocket belts, colorful boots, tennies and fake fur vests. My favorite lately is a sweatsuit by Zara in black velvet!

DID YOU LOVE IT RIGHT AWAY OR DID IT TAKE SOME TIME TO GET USE TO?

Since I live in Los Angeles, I thought about going gray for a long time. I wouldn’t say it’s the most recommended color palette for people who live in Hollywood!

In fact, I eventually ended up embracing my white hair because I was on vacation out East and did not have time to get my hair dyed. I noticed that the roots of my hair had turned a beautiful white! Since both of my parents also had beautiful white hair, I decided to let it show. I grew my hair about an inch and then cut it all off and I’ve never looked back. I loved it! It was fun and new and AUTHENTIC! It felt so right.

I don’t necessarily have a special shampoo. I just like to use natural products.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE ACCESSORY?

Yes! My chainmail cuffs.You can see them in most of my photos. I love them because they repeat my hair color. Wearing your hair color is very grounding so wearing them every day keeps me grounded and ready for anything that comes my way. AND they add an effortless drama to everything I wear. I am a winter and we winters need drama!

YOU STATED YOU ARE A WINTER.

WHICH COLOR COMBINATIONS WORK FOR YOUR SEASON?

The beauty of having a color palette based on your DNA is that there is harmony between the colors. You can wear/combine any color on the palette with any other color on the palette because it is all based on you. Some of my favorite color combinations are:

Black, white and red.

Black, white and copper.

Saffron, gold and purple.

Turquoise and black.

But I want to clarify that what works for me as a winter doesn’t necessarily work for another winter. Just like no 2 sets of eyes are alike, so too, no two palettes are the same. Two winters might share characteristics, like the need for drama I mentioned earlier, but no 2 palettes will be exactly the same.

THE HISTORY BEHIND COLOR THEROY.WHO CAME UP WITH THE WHOLE CONCEPT?

The originator of the Color Harmony Theory is my mentor, Suzanne Caygill. I met her in the early 1980s and studied with her. I represent the next generation of her wonderful work.

What Suzanne taught, and what I believe, is that someone’s authenticity emanates from their life force. The Spring’s life force or “inner light” is the sunlight. The Summer’s inner light is the twilight. The Autumn’s is the firelight. And the Winter’s is the moonlight. The inner light is your North Star! Your individualized DNA color palette becomes the foundation of your life.

The result of the quiz is your “seasonal” essence. It is meant to be just the beginning- a means by which to start the discovery of your soul’s journey. After that, we determine your individual colors by analyzing your unique coloring, considering which among the four thousand colors and patterns in my color system are most perfect for you.  When determining your season I take into account your coloring and your personality.

DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE PIECE THAT DEFINES YOUR STYLE?

What defines my style is the belief that Beauty is a Spiritual Practice. My style comes from honoring and wearing “myself” – wearing the colors of MY DNA and MY Sacred Design.

I use the principles of color harmony to dress in lots of layers. I use repetition and rhythm to create an ensemble.

For example, there is silver in my hair which I then repeat in my necklace, cuffs, belt, handbag and boots! I like to dress, and I encourage my clients to dress, as a “Walking Celebration of Themselves.”

DO YOU LIVE BY STYLE RULES OR DO YOU BREAK THE RULES?

I don’t allow outside influences to dictate my style. The rule I live by is the understanding of and the repeating of my natural coloring and design. Once I am anchored in these principles, I play with my full self-expression.

    Of course, I love your hair. and your wonderful style. I too found my hair white not gray at all when I decided to go gray over eight years ago. I I wonder if you know my friend Sharon Parsons who is now retired? She was very active in the West Coast/bay area Image Consultants group. Great pick this month Elizabeth. I always love seeing someone with such great style embracing their gray!

  19. What a fun and informative post! I love to read about people who consider what they wear based on factors other than what is currently “in style.” Jennifer looks great in everything, but my favorite look here is the black outfit with the silver vest, in which she is smashing! The vest, necklace, and her gorgeous hair are an amazing combination. I have made chainmaille bracelets and earrings, but never seen anything like the cuffs. Of course, I have seen chainmaille breast plates and body armour in museums, but the cuffs are fascinating to me. As to colors, I was told I was a Winter many years ago and I like wearing most of the colors; but the quiz says I am a Summer! What’s a girl to do? I suppose that there are similarities, and I admit to struggling over a few of the questions. Thank you for another wonderful feature, Elizabeth! And thank you, Jennifer, for participating.

I’m definitely a summer twilight. 🙂 But I would love to know what my power color is. I think red but then I rarely wear red. Maybe deep purple!   22. Wow, Jennifer’s style and wardrobe are a breath of fresh air and sunshine in a more conservative place like New England. The vibrant colors against her hair and skin look terrific.   25. Apologies Elizabeth for my rather late comment , life just gets in the way sometime. I found Jennifer,s insight into colour and style absolutely fascinating. I took the quiz and it turns out I am a Winter which may explain way I always feel so good wearing black and white. I think I may have to explore further , although being in Australia may be tricky..
    Jennifer’s colour combinations are exquisite as are her accessories ,especially .those beltsl
    Her silver hair is so beautiful and I was interested that when it was time she plunged straight in with a really short cut ( I am considering doing similar ). Once gain thank you for such a stylish and interesting woman.
