CAN YOU RELATE TO ANY OF THIS ?
Would you believe I have had a terrible cough going on 5 weeks……it maybe 6 but who’s counting!
AT first I thought I had COVID.
As I was at TWO showers in one weekend……..baby and bridal!
However, I took TWO at home tests and they came out NEGATIVE.
So I continued on for a bit and THE ITALIAN got it too!
SO we both started taking the famous ROBITUSSIN cough syrup, but I could not sleep at night without coughing all night!
One early morning I got up and went to bed with BANSKY!
He grunted a few times and I fell asleep!Our sofa is too short for me!
BANKSY was warm and happy I was there.I was happy to be beside him too.
I started taking the equivalent to NYQUIL which THE ITALIAN found at CVS……….
It worked WONDERS I SLEPT LIKE A BABY, but would wake up in the morning feeling a bit DRUNK………
I was hesitant to take these drugs with my ANTI-SEIZURE meds…….yes, I am on TWO different types for the FAMOUS EPISODES I have been having for years……
SIX YEARS but who is COUNTING!
Maybe that was it the combo of the meds………..?.
My cough was bad and I could barely chat on the telephone without coughing.
Which by the way is my FAVORITE form of communication these days.
We still have our HOUSE PHONE which my number ONE SON still uses!
OKAY, so I have given you my situation in a NUTSHELL.
HERE WE GO…..MY COURSE OF ACTION!
I called the ADVISE NURSE THREE TIMES……….first time a doctor was to call me back.
I carried the cell phone around until 10 pm that night.
NO CALL.
( NO BALL PLAYING. POOR US. MOM does not feel well!)
Called again a few days later as I was getting worse………
MEANWHILE ,I NEEDED TO DRIVE 40 minutes due EAST to get TESTED for COVID.
Got a nurse who took all the stats from me and you can tell they are READING OFF A COMPUTER!
She gave me a prescription!
This was 7 am…….by 7:30 am I was at the Pharmacy!
Do you know they do not open until 8:45 am!
What pharmacy in a hospital opens that late?
AND GUESS WHAT?
NO PHARMACY HAS IT IN STOCK in ALL of Northern California!
DUE TO SUPPLY SHORTAGES!
Now, I would think this has been going on for at least a week maybe MORE and THE ADVISE NURSES WOULD HAVE A LIST OF THESE DRUGS!
Maybe that is TOO MUCH COMMON SENSE iN TODAYS WORLD!
LET ME TAKE OVER AND I WILL STRAIGHTEN EVERY ONE OUT!
Meanwhile, no one at the front information desk to help these people who have PRE-OP appointments and need LAB work done.
Most are elderly with oxygen tanks!!
I DIRECTED TRAFFIC at this point and walked a gentleman to the LAB.
I somehow knew all the destinations as I have had procedures done in ALL OF THEM!
NO drugs picked up from trip in the early morning hours!
NOTHING!
Swearing all the way home I WAS.
Next ADVISED NURSE I CALL a few days later……..I cannot recall what happened there, but I did write my MD at some point and THREE days later he answered my email!He gave me a cough syrup with CODINE as that is what I asked for…….Now mind you this doctor has never seen me in person and I have just a FEW THINGS GOING ON IN THIS 61 year old body!
THEY NEVER READ THE HISTORY OF THE PATIENT; I HAVE LEARNED THE HARD WAY!
I HAVE TO TELL THEM GO LOOK AND SEE!
MY HISTORY BELOW.
1. HEART VALVE REPLACEMENT
2. MAC
MAC lung disease is caused by bacteria.
Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) is the most common form of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM).
NTM are bacteria commonly found in the ENVIRONMENT!
BOTTOM LINE BIRD POOP!
Additionally, MAC lung disease most commonly affects people who are:
Women Aged 65 and older
Have weakened immune systems
Live in coastal areas
( OH GOSH I HIT ALL THOSE ABOVE!)
Except the bit of being 65.
( IAM AGING FASTER THAN THE NORM SO MAYBE THAT IS THE ANSWER!)
3. FOCAL SEIZURES better known as EPILEPSY
THE NEWEST DIAGNOSIS in 2021!
I wrote back an email saying can he give me another prescription as the one he gave me lasted 4 days…………. and I’m still NOT BETTER.He answered we should meet in person in an email and that is when his assistant called me to tell me NO APPOINTMENTS until MID- JULY! Nor another prescription was written.I hung up…….
GUESS WHAT ?
I WAS PISSED!
It went on and on like this, which made me write my LUNG DOCTOR who I like a lot. He had his assistant call me the same day I wrote the email only to get me in at the end of the month.That day was JUNE 12th…….and I go in on June 29th.
Meanwhile, somehow I stumbled upon a telephone visit with another doctor which I was able to do on a SUNDAY!
She rang at 9:15 am took all my info and gave me a prescription for antibiotics.
For 4 days.
I think they are working!
I have one more day of pills………..and then we will see if I need to go through all this rigamarole again.
NOPE did not work…….STILL COUGHING and shooting out white mucus A LOT!
NOW I AM REALLY WORRIED AND THINK IT HAS SOMETHING TO DO WITH THE MAC!
THE LUNGS have been COMPROMISED in some way.
This DOCTOR sent me for a chest x-ray and a finger x-ray which I will not get into today!
CLEAR ~ CLEAR ~ CLEAR THOSE LUNGS OF MINE STILL SCARRING, BUT NOTHING TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT with this cough.
PHEW!
CHECK AND DOUBLE CHECK!
More time goes by and no prescription renewals…….
Don’t ask me WHY I think the doctor was NOT answering my emails because, so I hear they are so SWAMPED.I once again found on the website with a little bit of work and PATIENCE the DOCTOR to call for a phone appointment!This doctor rang me at 8:30 am.
“HOW CAN I HELP YOU” was the opening statement.
YOU think he had looked at my background?
NOPE!
So, I give him the run down.
He prescribes an inhaler like my Son had for his ASTHMA years ago.
His closing STATEMENT was “GOOD-LUCK”.
THANK GOD MY ITALIAN AND I COULD LAUGH ABOUT THAT………..
I should have EMAILED the LUNG DOCTOR from the GET GO, but I think of him being so busy with the COVID patients in ICU.
I did not want to bother him with MY LADY WINDERMERE.
(YES, that is another name for MAC!)
DON’T YOU LOVE THAT NAME for ME!!
I AM ON THE MEND AS I WRITE THIS AND ITS A GOOD THING I CAN LAUGH ABOUT IT NOW!
HOWEVER, WHEN YOU ARE IN THE MOMENT IT IS SCARY AND SO FRIGHTENING WHEN IT GOES ON AND ON……
OF COURSE THE ITALIAN WAS OVER IT IN 3 DAYS!

Gosh, so sorry you have not been feeling well, and had so much frustration with the health system.
Just FYI Steve had a very bad cough for about five weeks and the last week his chest hurt so bad we think his rib muscles were so exhausted and maybe a rib went out. By seventh week he is better now. Also a friend in my knitting group had similar cough for many weeks. My friend nor Steve went to the doctor as it’s too expensive and they don’t really do anything. Steve also did over the counter cough meds and this helped him, along with lots of water to keep hydrated.

I am sorry that you have had to once again experience maddening medical rigmarole. Four years ago I had a cough virus that was going around. My cough sounded AWFUL (but I felt fine). I still had the bad cough after a month… and it finally started to get better when I went to Florida for a week. I think that your compromised lungs caused your cough to linger for so long. Glad that you are feeling better. It’s difficult to get better and function well throughout the day when you cough all night. Take good care. ~Kathy from MA x/o

It is so upsetting our medical system now days. Since all my blood work and outward appearance indicate, at least to Dr’s, that I am an “extremely healthy 69 year old” (quote from Drs) they always Pooh Pooh any ailments I bring their way! So frustrating, do they REALLY think an “extremely healthy 69 year old” is just LONELY or something – I mean WHY in the world would I be visiting them otherwise??

Bottom line there is NO CURE at OUR AGE SO THEY SAY SOMETHING STUPID LIKE “GOOD LUCK!!”

I am always mystified at these medico-dramas you have, and your fortitude and determination are a credit to you – but really, this shouldn’t be happening in this time and place in the world!! No country’s health system is perfect but yours seems particularly blighted by comparison – if it wasn’t for your lovely family (and what a sweet poppet you’ve got now!!!) and beloved four-leggeds and home and garden and the Italian’s business etc etc, I’d say just up sticks and move! Even though pain-killing codeine medication was made prescription-only here four years ago because of a handful of abusers, we can still buy Rikodeine (my fave bliss-making night-time cough suppressant) & its brethren over-the-counter at the chemist!! ‘Nuff said 🙂

Sounds like you might have had a virus. I had one for a month, it was not Covid, but I was coughing a lot and continuously coughing up phlegm. Nothing really could be done but just rest and drink liquids, and it went away eventually but was frightening during it.

Whatever that cough is, it has been making the rounds here in San Diego, as well. My son and his tribe of friends have all had it. So far, I have been immune to it. Let’s keep it that way! I have recently had what sounds like the same virus. Worst cough I have ever had, and so much phlegm/mucus that I also thought it must be Covid despite many negative tests. The doctors do not want coughing patients in their rooms, so I went to a respiratory clinic where they were only interested in doing a Covid test – negative. Was given a prescription for antibiotics, but no other advice. One night I woke up ‘drowning’ in the thick mucus and thought ‘that is how people die of Covid’. I am 75. I began sleeping sitting upright and did that for a couple of weeks, with some difficulty on cold Winter nights. Eventually I could see my usual doctor who thinks I had RSV virus, (respiratory syncytial virus). I looked it up and it was exactly my symptoms. It is sweeping Australia these days, and is common in small children and the elderly (who I presume are getting it from the little ones). My darling grandbabies gave it to me; they catch it in day care. It is now six weeks and I still cough at night. The good news is I am still here, used cough mixtures and other over the counter meds, and a lot of rest. The cough was so extreme I lacerated my throat and often brought up blood. RSV is a lower-respiratory virus. All the best, and Get Well Soon! xx

So sorry you have been hit with that nasty cough Elizabeth. It’s been making the rounds in New Hampshire too. Lots of coughing, frustration and negative testing. Add health complications to it and I can understand the helplessness you were feeling. I had Covid in April, lots of coughing and I swear by Mucinex. My son has the same cough you have, negative Covid tests, Mucinex has helped a lot. Rest well and take care, I hope you see the last of it soon. xx

I am so sorry you went through that! Frightening! I have always thought we had a GREAT medical system, I have been so well cared-for through my chronic illnesses for many, many years – but Post-Covid it’s as if our medical system has completely fallen apart.
Like you, I have my doctors, I am educated and articulate about my conditions and meds, yet it’s a constant struggle now to get my needs met.
I can only imagine what a nightmare it is for others.

P.S. – If you don’t know of it, Mucinex is a great OTC for drying up mucous, no side-effects. (without the decongestant in it)

The medical system remains more and more of a mystery. Too many people? Gone are the days of timely efficiency. So sorry to hear of your recent challenges.
Seems one has to do their own legwork to make sure one rx can be taken with another as no one seems to pursue the thick medical records that we usually have by 60.
So interesting in that every appointment requires said information being filled out.

So sorry to hear about this ongoing thing Elizabeth.. here in Ontario, Canada same situation.. seems you have two options, go to emergency and wait your turn for hours, or speak to someone on the phone, usually nurse practitioner.. it’s very frustrating and scary when you are so ill. As you stated our health is everything.. seems everything is challenging since Covid hit our world.. nothing is normal.. sending you a hug and good thoughts to your beautiful home to get well in!!!!!

Oh dear, I’m sorry you are suffering through that. The Robitussin with codene helps but is dangerous too.
Do you use a vaporizer? I know you do everything you can to stay healthy.
I’m doing well, but at the moment, I have no kitchen. A total remodel. So very inconvenient. I go to pool at 9 am with the other condo mermaids. Feels wonderful.

I was NERVOUS with ALL that I TAKE NOW to MIX these other DRUGS into the COCKTAIL!!
The only side effect that I see is I can sleep all the time!

Oh dear. I live in France, and if I’m unwell I can get into my doctor quickly by going to one of the morning open clinics, all doctors here have one or two mornings a week when you can just go in and wait, and you will be seen — of course this is for your own doctor, not just any doctor. Oh, and did I say its virtually free? I sympathize with all of my friends in California who go through this incredible bs when they need to see a doctor. Hopefully the problem is resolving, but it didn’t have to take this long. Am I grateful? Yes, indeed.

Health care is getting to be like every thing else. Can’t depend on it. My husband keep’s getting med’s prescribed but they can’t fill the prescription because they’re out!! I had the dreaded cough after a trip to Tampa. Lot’s of sleep and water, and yes it lingers. I hope you get better soon. Thank’s for your wonderful post’s, I love seeing therm.

I always learn so much beneficial information from you concerning health. When you share then others share. We all benefit. Oh dear, you have been through it! It does sound viral, however a few years ago I had something similar, went on for ages, was whooping cough!( And no whoop with it!) But I was sick after coughing so much! Apparently, it’s more common than people think, in over 59s.
One thing I find for a cough, that is actually recommended over here, is a spoonful of honey….worth a try.

What an ordeal. GEESH! BTW, if you were using the Covid tests the government sent you, more than likely, the results were inaccurate. The government announced that while in transit to your door, the tests had been stored in freezing conditions which rendered them useless! Wow – you’ve been through the ringer. I am glad you are feeling better but what a fiasco.
I had one grand mal seizure in college and no one could tell me why. They wanted to put me on all sorts of medication and I said no. I had “funny feelings” for a few years afterward, and it just went away. Those meds are serious stuff!
My husband and I are very healthy for our age (knock on wood) and we both have concierge care. Which is basically better healthcare for those who can afford it. Sadly I think that’s where we are going – sort of like in the UK. Our docs will respond immediately to a call or text 24/7.
I have not been sick (except for headaches, hangovers and sciatica) since 2019. When covid hit, I started taking all sorts of immune supplements and I never got it, and haven’t gotten sick. At all. Maybe they really do help. Or maybe I’ve just been lucky.

I am so sorry you went through this Elizabeth. We have gone through this same rig a ma role for years. Something needs to change. Maybe protection from frivolous lawsuits, get the insurance out of our doctor appointments etc. I don’t know but something! It’s time for Big changes to EVERYTHING. Sending love to you!

Just want to mention, my husband and I recently had Covid and the first few times that we tested, we showed to be negative. Day 5…bought some brand new tests and we were POSITIVE! Whether you may have had Covid or not, the fact that you and the Italian were both coughing is a clue to it being viral. I’m still night coughing, even though I last tested negative over a week ago.
That being said, your experience with the medical system is absolutely maddening! Good thing you are persistent and resourceful – two of your many amazing super powers!!

Contessa … how dreadful. Our medical system is in a shambles and it’s incredibly scary and frustrating when we’re feeling poorly to navigate through it. This cough is making the rounds and lasts longer in some than others. As you know. I’m sure your Lady Windermere’s made it the later for you. I’m so glad you are -finally – getting relief. Jim and I seriously considering concierge care, as Gray mentioned. It is expensive but when one is sick there is no time to mess around. I’m so sorry you’ve been thru the wringer with the medical system, again. You’re a trooper. xo

I heard that cough. It was terrible!!!!! I can’t wait for you to be on Medicare and get out of the system you’re in. It’s crazy making. Have you read about how Mark Cuban is creating his own pharmacy system. Challenging the way pills are priced these days. It’s all crazy. It’s been made worse with coved i’m glad you’re on the mend, kinda mend.
